About this listen

They say every cloud has a silver lining....

When Freya Miller is struck by tragedy, losing her husband and her home within a short time, she is burdened with many worries. The main one being where she and her five-year old daughter, Skye, are going to live. A chance meeting with the charismatic Dr Marsden changes all that. He offers the young mother the most amazing opportunity: an apartment at one of London’s most exclusive addresses for a fraction of the market rental cost. It’s an offer Freya simply can’t refuse. Within a couple of weeks, Freya and Skye are moving into Adder House and meeting the other welcoming residents. They very quickly feel part of the family.

But just when Freya truly believes all her problems are history, a series of strange, unexplained occurrences begin. It leaves Freya with the unshakeable feeling that even when their apartment door is securely locked, she and her daughter are not alone. Freya thought she’d left all her troubles behind her, yet she soon realises there are problems here that are far more terrifying than before.

For behind the doors of Adder House, everything is most definitely not as it seems.

Old secrets refuse to stay buried, and someone is determined to keep a terrible past very much alive.

I would have loved the book to have a few more twists and turns, the ending was thrown in the book in the last 20 minutes. more build up and more attempts to make her crazy needed.

Great book, the ending was very sudden

I did enjoy this book however I found it pretty predictable and it dragged on a bit

The story is average but not very believable and assumes that women of all ages are gullible and a bit stupid, not to mention the rubbish this woman put up with from her child. I love a good “grouping” psychological thriller but this book was not it. Or maybe it was just the reader’s voice that puts the story in the wrong light. Either way, average at best.

I thought this would turn out to be written by a man...

Whilst I was gripped from the very start the ending was a little disappointing.
I really couldn't understand Freya being sucked in even though her current situation was very difficult. Brought immediately to mind the old adage, "If it seems to good to be true, it almost certainly is."
I do enjoy K L Slater's books but felt that this situation stretched belief that little bit too far.

Disturbing situation and compelling story but...

Many twists and turns making you feel more and more uneasy as the story unfolds, did not want it to finish, left wanting more.

Could not stop listening!! intriguing

The ending was the most disappointing for me. The book lacked the usual twists and the main character was quite annoying. Hoping this is a one off as I really enjoy KL Slater's writing.

Not one of KL Slater's best books

Good book, good story line, felt short and didn’t hit the thrilling point I hoped for but still a really good listen and good plot, some twists were unseen.

Good book

Well... there I was thinking the tension was building nicely and wondering how it will continue before slowly getting untangled. And then - in one chapter - it was all over! All that effort to weave a convincing and tense take just thrown away over a lazy and unsatisfactory ending. Just too convenient. I won’t be picking up any more by this author!

Starts strong... fades to nothing

I like unusual books and this one was certainly something original. It follows the old adage "if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is" especially when single parent Freya Miller and her daughter are offered a stunning Kensington apartment for a low rent. A woman who has been fostered, abused and betrayed by her husband (recently deceased), she is a strong character. But little by little her defences are worn down. The residents of Adder House all seem a bit creepy, but more disturbing are the unexplained noises and a general feeling she is being stalked. She fears for her daughter, since she too is subjected to a series of upsetting, psychologically disturbing events. The story flowed well and had me gripped all the way through. The ending did seem a little strange but over all, I thought it was great.

Good psychological suspense throughout

Great story and performance, although I agree with other reviews that the child voice impression is awful.
