Summary
‘I keep feeling like I’m being watched - dropping the boys off at school, choosing wine at the supermarket - but when I turn around there’s nobody there....’
When single mother Darcy’s son falls from a rope bridge at a local playground, life stands still. She clutches his small, limp body, frozen, until a pair of strong hands push her aside, and she watches as George, a local doctor, saves her son’s life.
George, with his twinkling hazel eyes, easy charm and lack of wedding band is almost too good to be true, but coffee becomes lunch, lunch becomes dinner, and soon they can’t go an evening without seeing each other. When he invites her to move into his beautiful home with its sprawling garden for her boys, Darcy doesn’t hesitate.
But as Darcy is settling in, she receives a bunch of flowers with a chilling message.
George says they’re from an obsessed ex-girlfriend, Opal, and days later Opal turns up at Darcy’s son’s football match. She claims to have shocking information that could threaten George’s custody of his daughter.
Darcy doesn’t know whom to trust, but she’s starting to suspect that, whatever the truth, she might have put her beloved boys into terrible danger....
From the million-copy-best-selling author K.L. Slater, this utterly gripping psychological thriller will make you gasp out loud as you race towards the unforgettable twist. If you loved The Girl on the Train and The Wife Between Us this book is for you.

Disappointing
I have previously enjoyed a number of KL Slater books but less so recently and this was very disappointing feeling rushed out rather than considered. Twists and turns are good but when every single character is delusional and dishonest it becomes a farce rather than a thriller. When every plot point becomes a twist the overall effect is predictable as everything presented is just the opposite of what it initially appears to be and nothing has any credibility. I wanted to love it but it just descended into a chaotic farce.

Surprisingly awfully painful to listen to!
It's Ok-ish My personal opinion though?
. It's rushed, maybe too quickly written
. The storyline is unrealistic, and crazy
. It reminds me of a bad drama/or bad dream!
. Starts in one direction and then goes due south!
. A string of unbelievable coincidences
. Some insights into the various characters are credible.
.Excellent Narrator however. (she does save a few blushes!)

Became very boring
This book started off ok, but as I progressed through it I became aware that the author must have been short of decent material to write down, and started talking about "pan fried steaks!". But that was not to be the only time that the author seemed lost for decent dialogue. The author kept on chucking in all manner of uninteresting paragraphs of total and utter rubbish!! I could no longer listen to such drivel. And I'm rather sad about that, because I have listened to a few of K.L. Slater books and they were all very good. Sorry but this one went slightly off piste.

Great! - Everything That a Good Thriller Should Be
What a wonderful read. The best thriller that I've listened to in ages. K. L. Slater is good anyway, this is one of her very best.
Easy to follow, yet just the right amount of complexity to keep the listener gripped all the way through. There are no flat bits.
As per the Audible summary, our couple meet by chance and have their romance. Both of them bring a lot of previous "baggage" to this new relationship. Also more than one of the characters has mental health issues, thus making their narration potentially unreliable. These two factors are the core of the plot. After a while, we really don't know who to believe.
Just to be clear, this isn't primarily a love story, it's a thriller. There is danger and there are threats. The listener knows about the dangers and threats but is mainly in the dark about where they come from. Also the suspense is real. The author doesn't have to create it artificially by jumping randomly between time frames to generate confusion as some authors do.
I say that the book was easy to follow. That was the case until about the last hour, and chapter 63. After that point I had to keep stopping and replaying the start of each new chapter to figure out what was going on. The twists and turns come thick and fast from that point. Everything you thought you understood, needs to be "re-thunk" from that point!
Occasionally, I found myself unsure which character was narrating. If you bear in mind that Darcy is the only one narrating in the first person present tense, that helps a lot. The other characters give their narration in the third person past tense.
Absolutely first class reading by Lucy Price-Lewis. The highest praise I can give is that I wasn't aware of her. I really felt that it was the characters themselves speaking. Even the men; the men sounded like they had men's voices, the children had children's voices and so on.
(PS. I hope it will soon be regarded as "normal" for people to have mental health issues, and not to use us as cannon fodder for psychological thrillers.)

Two many twists
All thrillers aspire to an unpredictable twist, but this one goes too far in trying to create twists by building an unbelievable story. There are too many holes and unlikely situations. I had a hard time finishing this book. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

Far fetched, unlikely story.
Despite Lucy Price-Lewis's narration, flawless as usual, the story is so implausible I had trouble finishing the book. The main character acts irrationally, the so-called twists are crude and obviously contrived to keep a weak narrative going - in a nutshell, skip this one.

Not Slater’s Best
I liked the first few of Slater’s books but the last two I listened to, including this one, seemed off. Like she was trying to hard. It’s a bit all over the place with too many unconvincing twists. It just wasn’t believable at all. It was a drawn out story just for a unconvincing ending . LPL is a fabulous narrator though! I absolutely love her.
