For Damir, time is money. He bikes around the city collecting food orders, rushing through the cycle lanes next to Uber drivers and grocery vans – and all the other people delivering your every desire. He arrives with your sushi rolls and fries and disappears into the night – Ping! Onto the next drop. He is invisible; one player in the boardgame of the city. But one summer’s evening, a chance encounter changes all the rules. Damir arrives on Decca’s doorstep with a bag of spilled edamame beans, in a postcode that could be another universe, and there’s an immediate connection.

Chiltern boards the 23:50 sleeper train from London to Edinburgh with two pork pies, six beers and a packet of chocolate digestives. At 23:55 he sends a message to all 158 people in his contacts, telling them that he plans to end his life in the morning. He then switches his phone to flight mode. He’s said goodbye. To him, it’s the end of his story - and time to crack open the biscuits. But across the world, 158 phones are lighting up with a notification. 

Tommo has just started at a new school—a training ground for the Scottish elite—when his friend Johnnie's brother is found dead in a Land Rover on a Highland farm. There's a shotgun at his feet. Nobody seems clear about what has happened, least of all Tommo. A child of the middle class, and with new independence thrust upon him, Tommo finds himself invited into fading crumbling houses. It's the early nineties and this elite is struggling for relevance. Alienated from the mainstream, and running low on inherited wealth, his peers have retreated into snobbery and fatalism.
