Summary

THE NUMBER ONE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
CHOSEN BY WATERSTONES AS ONE OF THEIR BEST CRIME & THRILLER BOOKS OF 2024

'As a comedian, Bob Mortimer spins a shaggy-dog story like nobody else, and this is a rollicking old-school yarn' The Guardian

‘Mortimer’s verbal specificity and off-kilter humour will keep his fans chuckling’ The Times

WARNING - this book includes: heavy crimes, car journeys, dreadfulness, large fruits, romance, planning applications, and a lot of pie.

Gary Thorn is struggling with a big decision. Should he stay in London, wallowing in the safety of his legal job in Peckham and eating pies with his next door neighbour, Grace and her dog Lassoo, or should he move to Brighton, where his girlfriend Emily is about to open The Hotel Avocado? Either way, he’d be letting someone down.

But sinister forces are gathering in a cloud of launderette scented-vape smoke, and the arrival of the mysterious Mr Sequence puts Gary in an even worse predicament: soon he might be dead.

All Gary wants is a happy life. But he also wants to be alive to enjoy it…

Editorial Review

A Mortimer fan is born
Truth: I’m new to the Bob Mortimer game. As I’ve gotten more into UK comedy this year, it’s been nice discovering legendary talent with full catalogues of work to catch up on and get acquainted with. The comedian and author’s latest novel, The Hotel Avocado, is everything you want it to be – funny, smart, compelling. As a newly minted Mortimer fan, I found it was a great place to start digging into his prolific body of work. — Aaron S., Audible Editor

I liked the addition of the new voices and the how Bob has come into his voice in the first book the first hour or so was flat but came to life after that in this audio he was raring from the get go. Chapter 41 (Emily) around 10:08 you can hear a squeak of a chair the only lapse in production lol but besides my personal gripes this is a throughly good cheerful listen I do hope both books will be made for a tv adaptation with Kathy Burke playing grace

A graceful ode to pies

Lovely to catch up with Gary Emily and Grace again. Like meeting up with old friends. Another brilliant book by Bob Mortimer and so well narrated by all the cast.

I wanted to buy a book by Bob Mortimer as I've always enjoyed his work on tv. I pondered and eventually decided to go for The Hotel Avocado - hoping that it wouldn't matter if I hadn't read the previous books there might be with these characters. Call me a cheapskate but I like value for money and - as I listen to audiobooks all day, every day while I work - the length is an important factor. At 9 hours+ this one won the contest (and, as it turns out, it didn't matter that I hadn't read any previous ones - phew).

The book is so wonderfully written with lots of gorgeous quirks and I found it genuinely chuckle out loud funny!

The narration is exceptional - as you'd expect from the geniuses Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse. I was unfamiliar with Julie Maisey but she does an absolutely cracking job. I have to say I'm actually not a fan of Sally Phillips (sorry) but she narrates her character well in this instance.

Heartily recommended to anyone who needs a smile

Gripping and Hilarious. Great story, Great characters. I loved the storytelling style, with monologues from each character telling the events from their side of the story, and then fitting all the pieces together. ‘That’s good to know’ Thanks Bob.
