THE NUMBER ONE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
CHOSEN BY WATERSTONES AS ONE OF THEIR BEST CRIME & THRILLER BOOKS OF 2024

'As a comedian, Bob Mortimer spins a shaggy-dog story like nobody else, and this is a rollicking old-school yarn' The Guardian

‘Mortimer’s verbal specificity and off-kilter humour will keep his fans chuckling’ The Times

WARNING - this book includes: heavy crimes, car journeys, dreadfulness, large fruits, romance, planning applications, and a lot of pie.

Gary Thorn is struggling with a big decision. Should he stay in London, wallowing in the safety of his legal job in Peckham and eating pies with his next door neighbour, Grace and her dog Lassoo, or should he move to Brighton, where his girlfriend Emily is about to open The Hotel Avocado? Either way, he’d be letting someone down.

But sinister forces are gathering in a cloud of launderette scented-vape smoke, and the arrival of the mysterious Mr Sequence puts Gary in an even worse predicament: soon he might be dead.

All Gary wants is a happy life. But he also wants to be alive to enjoy it…

Editorial Review

A Mortimer fan is born
Truth: I’m new to the Bob Mortimer game. As I’ve gotten more into UK comedy this year, it’s been nice discovering legendary talent with full catalogues of work to catch up on and get acquainted with. The comedian and author’s latest novel, The Hotel Avocado, is everything you want it to be – funny, smart, compelling. As a newly minted Mortimer fan, I found it was a great place to start digging into his prolific body of work. — Aaron S., Audible Editor

Screw The Guardian's rubbish review, I really enjoyed it! I'd love to be a little bit more Bob Mortimer, he's just brilliant. The ongoing stories of the existing characters was wonderful, the new characters were great, there was fun, intrigue, danger and romance. What more can you ask for?

More excellent Bob Mortimer

Loved the first book. And this one was equally as enjoyable. Bob is a legend. Lovely man. I highly recommend his autobiography. And Away…

Another Good One

Fantastic narration and choice of actors voicing the parts. 15 word min sucks a lot.

Better than the first!

Even better than his first book. A fantastic, feel good story with superb narration. Having Paul Whitehouse, Sally Phillips and Julie Maisey as co narrators really works!

Do read The Satsuma Complex first though! There’s a lot of history and character build up which you need to know in order to enjoy The Hotel Avocado thoroughly!

Clever and very, very funny though dark in places

As a follow up to the excellent Satsuma Complex, this is a triumph. Will Gary and Emily be able to make their long distance relationship work? Will Emily’s plans for a fruit themed hotel come to “fruition”! Will Grace be able to reunite with her granddaughter? Will the baddies who always seem to be one step ahead succeed?
This story is very well written, the quirky observations of life reflected in every page, Bob Mortimer’s unique sense of humour runs through the story, but you are also kept guessing right to the end as to who can be trusted and whether good will win in the end.

Brilliant storytelling
