About this listen

Nothing interferes with Shane Hollander's game - definitely not the sexy rival he loves to hate.

Pro hockey star Shane Hollander isn't just crazy talented, he's got a spotless reputation. Hockey is his life. Now that he's captain of the Montreal Voyageurs, he won't let anything jeopardize that, especially the sexy Russian whose hard body keeps him awake at night.

Boston Bears captain Ilya Rozanov is everything Shane's not. The self-proclaimed king of the ice, he's as cocky as he is talented. No one can beat him - except Shane. They've made a career on their legendary rivalry, but when the skates come off, the heat between them is undeniable. When Ilya realizes he wants more than a few secret hookups, he knows he must walk away. The risk is too great.

As their attraction intensifies, they struggle to keep their relationship out of the public eye. If the truth comes out, it could ruin them both. But when their need for each other rivals their ambition on the ice, secrecy is no longer an option...

Author Rachel Reid did a great job with this. She really sustains the 7 years of brief encounters between these two players so well, primarily by creating two characters that are genuinely engaging with a complex dynamic, who we really want to be together and enjoy being with. The Russian player, Ilya, really fuels the proceedings - he’s sexy, strong, dominating, very snarky and funny, yet soft and full of longing as well. His Slavic ethnicity goes well with his hard outer shell and enjoyably chaotic nature in the NHL - but when he says things will be okay, you believe him. The Canadian player, Shane, is lovely but schooled in nothing but the game, naive and inexperienced, and it’s incredibly sexy when the Russian schools him in other things, fulfilling his desires. Very nicely done.

I love this narrator, Tor Thom. His narration on the 1st book in this series is so enjoyable because he’s playing this civilian character, an underachiever, a great guy full of potential who just doesn’t see himself as other people do but is ready to step up. He’s hilarious and quirky and unique - he sees himself as kind of a loser - not the kind of character often, truly portrayed in this genre. Tor Thom brings the same kind of off-kilter quirkiness to the Russian player, Ilya, here which just gives his narration a sense of immediacy - he makes you really listen. (He’s great with R.S. McKenzie’s Devil’s Mayhem MC series as well, which is obviously different in tone from this material but which I highly recommend checking out, The Convict.)

I will continue with Reid’s hockey series - it will be amazing if she can top this but she does a great job of threading the previous characters through this series so I’ll be looking forward to hearing more about Ilya and Shane. The conclusion is handled so well, my eyes were welling with warm tears that streamed down my face throughout the last chapters. Highly recommend. Really well done.

Loved this! Highly recommend!

Ilya sounds like a Bond villain and somehow Shane’s parents have southern US accents, and I can’t wait to for Connor and Shane to re-record this. But the story is great and worth reading!

Another great story if you can stand the narrator
