Top Gear turned gloomy Sunday nights into celebratory Friday nights. It made household names of presenters Clarkson, Hammond and May, their unique chemistry and buddy movie antics proving irresistible to a vast global audience. With these three at the helm, Top Gear earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most popular factual TV show on the planet.

Then, a short while later, it was all gone.

How did a thoroughly sensible little consumer advice programme on cars turn into a global phenomenon in the first place, though? How did it all go wrong? And how did they rise from the ashes as The Grand Tour, and go on to scale even greater heights?

One man has all the answers.

There from the beginning, Top Gear and The Grand Tour co-creator, and Jeremy’s oldest friend, Andy Wilman, opens the bonnet on over twenty years of motoring mayhem. In Mr Wilman’s Motoring Adventure, the mysterious man in the shadows tells the inside story of your favourite TV shows for the first time.

Irreverent, joyful and as laugh-out-loud funny as the shows themselves, it’s the best book about Top Gear and The Grand Tour . . . in the world.

As Andy himself said, he is talented as weaving a story together and guiding you through it. Having watched the TG and GT episodes, this audiobook was a great accompaniment, showing you what went into making them, and some of the production strories behind some well known events. I'm still not convinced of the Patagonia number plate controvasy however, far too much of a coincidence Mr Wilman, you doth protest too much of your innocence in that story...

Enjoyable listen, peak behind the TG / GT curtain

The genius behind this book is that you don't have to be either a Top Gear or The Grand Tour fan to thoroughly enjoy it. Mr Wilman's Motoring Adventure is brilliantly written, genuinely laugh-out-loud funny and fascinating in a “how on earth did any of this ever get approved” kind of way.

There are loads of great behind-the-scenes stories, tons of detail without ever getting boring, and it’s got that perfect mix of chaos, competence, and absolute madness that Top Gear and The Grand Tour always felt like. Also, Andy Wilman narrating it himself is spot on. It’s read exactly how it should be read, the timing is perfect, and it just makes the whole thing land even better.

If you like Top Gear/Grand Tour, or you just like funny, well-told stories about television being held together with tape and hope, you won't be disappointed. It's the only Audible book I've listened to without my mind wandering off, and is the only book I've finished and then immediately started again.

As a massive fan of the gang I really enjoyed this listen. It’s amazing what he and the others achieved and how effortless it looked on the tele but listening how they did it was really eye opening. Thank you both for the tele and this book. Incredible

The spirit of TopGear in writing

We watched Top Gear and then Grand Tour as a family with our son who is now 27. We loved it especially the specials in Vietnam and Botswana.

To hear the back story of the journey you all went through is fascinating. I must admit I thought James, Richard and Jeremy were friends long before TG. Thank you. Going to watch a few of the specials again now!
