About this listen

It is late at night on a notorious council estate in east London. A van - garishly painted with a grinning clown's face on the side - is being driven erratically. When the police pull over the driver to question him, they discover, inside the van, the body of a young woman.

A murder suspect . . . an arrest . . . a confession . . . A case done and dusted? But their suspect claims his victim is not his first, but his third.

Five years earlier, a 13-year-old girl disappeared in broad daylight on a busy London street. DCS James Langton headed the investigation and left no stone unturned. The fact that case was not solved has haunted him ever since. The enquiry has opened up again but, unable to lead it due to ill health, Langton brings in DCI Anna Travis. Meanwhile the murder team begins the laborious task of verifying the details of the confessions and uncovering the identity of the second victim.

And then the suspect changes his story. They know they have a murderer in custody - but is he a serial killer or just a compulsive liar?©2012 Lynda La Plante (P)2012 Simon & Schuster Audio

Not Lynda La Plante’s best work. It was a short story so easy enough to get through but there’s much better work oh hers out there.

Not great but OK

I liked this book. Like another reviewer, I could really have done without the telephone conversations. Really hard to hear and brought nothing to the story. My only other gripe is the accent for Langton. Not sure I had him down as a northerner. I feel sure that in earlier books he was from the South. Continuity needs to be reviewed. But i would hate to give the impression that I didn't enjoy the book because I did.

Another good one from Lynda

I was worried that as a shorter text it wouldn't be as developt enough to be enjoyable but it hit a nice balance. I listened to his while I was sick & helped distract me from my pain & insomnia. I'll happly try other texts from this writer or narrator :)

Enjoyable short read that keeps ya mind ficused

I started it this morning and listened to it in a single day, so it must've been good!

Sorry I did not enjoy the way this was written. Obviously something personal to me as I do enjoy crime fiction. This was almost like a television script.

Great story! Can’t put it down once it gets juicy. Recommend to anyone who likes hard murder cases with lots of surprises.

It kept me awake all night, instead of going to sleep and then having to find the last bit I’d heard and begin listening again the next night.

Pace and tension with just sufficient information on the degree of violence.

Excellent all round. Well done Samantha Bond too, a measured and polished narration, with appropriate grit., and characters voices that didn’t distract from the great story.

Excellent

As a scouser I found the scouse accent portrayed by the narrator not the best, but not the worst. I could tolerate it though, others may not.
I felt the story finished in the middle of nowhere, & no direction what the follow up book was, or even if there was one.
Apart from what I have said, I did enjoy parts of the book.

Not bad
