Summary

No one is above the law.

Barfield Prison is one of the toughest high-security prisons in England, housing the country's most dangerous criminals. And when an inmate is found dead in his cell, a riot breaks out, forcing the authorities to investigate a potential murder.

Despite being Barfield's youngest ever female Governor, Helen Hewitt is seen as the best woman for the job. But with a prison full of corrupt and suspicious officers, restless inmates and a broken system, Helen has her work cut out - and no allies to help her....

Based on the popular TV series starring Janet McTeer, the complete and unabridged Governor series is now available for the first time in audio.

Slow

Very slow. Good story about prison life. Similar events to those shared by the autobiographies of prison officers much told in a mild story fashion. Story did not hold my interest and I struggled to stay with it to the end.

Didn’t know what to expect and I enjoyed it

The title says it all . Did enjoy it even though at times could seem a little too far fetched.

Glad I didn't pay for it

Interesting idea, certainly of it's time, very farfetched in places, prefer the prime suspect books

the story is good and think gives a true inside to prison life gritty and truthfull..however bein a brummie myself was shamed into the brummie accent of one of the prisoners hopes they can get someone with a true brummy accent as this one was cringeworthy..bit am ready to read part 2. as I'm a fan of la plantes work...

Great read

Thought it was great. Hope the story came out of some good research and inside consultations. It certainly felt authentic, especially the H.O. and political aspects. Compelling narrative.

good story but drug on at times.

Slow moving at times but worth it in the end. in addition, for such a strong woman her school-girl crush was pathetic...especially when she knew he was dating one of her assistants.

I'm hooked.

This was an amazing listen. I really enjoy fiction books with a message. This one has dozens of messages - women can be intelligent and strong in the most dangerous section of the male world is the major theme. You will have to listen yourself to hear the other messages. Excellent writing and wonderful narration. Not a single boring moment.

Great story

I enjoyed this story, but the first part felt independent from the rest, almost as if they were separate books: a prequel and a sequel. The story was engaging though the addition of so many insignificant characters made it feel confusing. I was a bit let down by such a major plot line (*spoiler: helicopter escape) wasn't even mentioned again or brought to a conclusion. I'll read the second book because I want to see if all the above are resolved there.

I listened on Audible and the narrator is absolutely one of my favorites as of recently and she made this story infinitely better.

Amazing!

Interesting plot/idea, The Governor. A complicated story, very well told. An insight into the tangled web of prison politics, unraveled with a lot of insight into both the prisoners' life's, that of those in daily contact with them, as well as those managing both on the outside. Not just a story, but one made that much more interesting in the telling of all the facts, dynamics, and details. Am on to Part II of The Governor.

So good I immediately ordered the sequel

Wow! This story is engaging, and Lucy Price-Lewis reads it with urgency, making The Governor great entertainment. I enjoyed watching Helen Hewitt, the youngest female governor in charge of a brutal prison in England, grow into the position, surprising her superiors and subordinates.
