Summary

Written by Drew Wagar under official license from the creators of, and based in the vast universe of, the seminal space trading computer game Elite: Dangerous

Lady Kahina Loren, born into the Prism system's powerful ruling family, is desperate to throw off the shackles of her privileged lifestyle and discover herself, but ambition crumbles when she faces death at the hands of the one person she thought she could trust.

With the advanced technology of the third millennium, death is not always as final as it seems, but when that technology malfunctions, is death the better option?

loved it. but...

I really enjoyed this book, drew has written a great book that makes me feel like I'm playing elite. Toby Longworth is a really good narrator, so good I actually thought Christopher Lee and Mark strong were in the cast at times (they're not)... Great narrator.

What seriously let's let's book down is the fact that there is a sequel that likely will never be available as an audiobook. I don't have time or the patience to physically read a book, I prefer the immersivness of an audiobook. plus I can listen to books while working..

But the sequel, retaliation by drew wagner likely won't ever be made into an audio format because frontier hold the licence to it and won't dramatise it. cmon!

Drew: Great
Toby: Great
Fdev: not so great... despite having a great game.

Story is fine, background SFX intensely annoying

The story is fine, and the vocal performances are great.

The laboriously drawn out piratical torture scenes I just skipped forward over. I get it, The storyline needs to establish that the bad guys really are black hats, for their no doubt long awaited final destruction in some future book, but I could do without exposing myself to all that totally bleeped up crap.

The real problem is with the post production sound effects. I get the intent. I really do. The background hum of machinery, ventilation systems on ships, whine of drives engaging etc, it’s all an attempt to set the scene and put us onto the decking of a starship in flight, but honestly it’s just damned annoying. I frequently zeroed out the sound, wondering if the freezer in my kitchen had switched into high gear. Or the boiler had kicked on. Or a neighbour was doing a washing machine spin cycle. No, it was aways the damned background sound effects in this audio book.

If there’s time to remaster the later books, just kill the background hum, whine, all those sound effects.

Just delete them already !

Superb

This had me absolutely gripped. Wonderfully written, wonderful performance.

Drew has done a fantastic job of paint a picture of everything from the grand to the minute, the sights and sounds and everything beyond.

Kudos indeed.

First scifi book since Dune

This is the first sci fi book i have read since dune as it normally doesn't interest me. But all my friends recomend that i take the plunge and pick it up. And boy was it worth it. I hope and pray Frontier grant Drew the permission to make the 2nd book in Audio format so i can continue the journey. Would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get into the sci fi books as its an easy read well narrated and extremely gripping.

Out of this world!

I was somewhat sceptical about getting this book. With hindsight, I left it far too long. A great story, well told and with brilliant performances. The story time literally flew by. Recommend for those Elite fans or just sci-fi fans in general.

Great story

Enjoyed every moment of this story, and learned a lot about the deeper lore of the Elite universe. a cast of characters just big enough to keep it interesting, but not so many that you lose track of who is who. Wonderful mix of high tech 33rd century and Renaissance technology and society. Loved the political intrigue woven into the plot, and while the writing did have a few brief moments where it got a bit stilted and repetitive, Toby Longworth's performance (and the background SFX/music) really shine. Highly recommended to any fans of the Elite universe, and to anyone who enjoys grand space opera in general.

ive played and currently play the elite games

This book is amazing. I've read almost all available lore as well as listen to Drew Wagars stream of lore and some O.G. gameplay. Saying all that, the book shows an amazing understanding of the game and lore! The voice acting is varied and dine very well, giving tons of life to the characters! They even use the sound effects from the game! If you're a fan of the space sci-fi genre or elite games in general I truly recommend this book!

One of the best audiobooks I've ever heard.

The narrator does a stellar performance with several different accents and voices for all the various characters. This book also features music and sound effects in the backround which blends flawlessly into the performance of the narrator. I'd have times where I'd get lost in a trance-like state as the audiobook played out like a movie in my mind.

I couldn't recommend this any more than I already do.

If you enjoy Elite. I think you'll enjoy this.

Mr. Wagar did a fine job. I found the characters emotionally compelling. In each character, I found qualities to appreciate, even if I despised a few of them. The best characters had as many questions as answers, and I wanted to see the whole cavalcade through!

Admittedly, I hoped the next book was on Audible as well. At this review it is not. I believe the Narrator's name is Mr. Longworth. He is true to his name. Damn good job. One of the best. I'll seek more works from both gentlemen.

I listened while playing Elite Dangerous. It was immersing. I felt as if I were a single star away from it all. I'll fly to the same stars after this. Visit the sites. o7 Cmdrs.

A Space Opera for those who dream of the frontier

Not just for Elite Dangerous players, this book is a well written and performed space opera for any fan of the genre!

I'm an avid Elite Dangerous player, and a big sci-fi space opera fan. Put these two things together and this book was a shoe-in for one of my favorite books to listen to. So I'm biased.

However, as a listener of many other popular series, I must say the story here stands out amongst them. Sure it helps that I can head out in my own Anaconda in-game and visit these fictional locations - I don't think it would make a difference if I was a player or not.

This book is a great story, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an action filled space opera.

As for ED players... this book will make you feel at home in the Black - especially with the audiobook adding in familiar sound effects to deepen the immersion. I'll see you in the Formadine Rift! o7

Great story for fans of the game

Fun storyline, lots of twists and turns. Narration is very good and I enjoyed the use of in game sounds during appropriate times.
