Summary

An expert on the psychology of leadership and the best-selling author of Integrity, Necessary Endings, and Boundaries for Leaders identifies the critical ingredient for personal and professional well-being.

Most leadership coaching focuses on helping leaders build their skills and knowledge and close performance gaps. These are necessary but not sufficient. Using evidence from neuroscience and his work with leaders, Dr. Henry Cloud shows that the best performers draw on another vital resource: personal and professional relationships that fuel growth and help them surpass current limits.

Popular wisdom suggests that we should not allow others to have power over us, but the reality is that they do, for better or for worse. Consider the boss who diminishes you through cutting remarks versus one who challenges you to get better. Or the colleague who always seeks the limelight versus the one who gives you the confidence to finish a difficult project. Or the spouse who is honest and supportive versus the one who resents your success. No matter how talented, intelligent, or experienced, the greatest leaders share one commonality: the power of the others in their lives.

Combining engaging case studies, persuasive findings from cutting-edge brain research, and examples from his consulting practice, Dr. Cloud argues that whether you're a Navy SEAL or a corporate executive, outstanding performance depends on having the right kind of connections to fuel personal growth and minimize toxic associations and their effects. Presenting a dynamic model of the impact these different kinds of connections produce, Dr. Cloud shows listeners how to get more from themselves by drawing on the strength and expertise of others. You don't have a choice whether or not others have power in your life, but you can choose what kinds of relationships you want.

For work - and life

Would you listen to The Power of the Other again? Why?

I expect to dip in and out of this book many times. It is well narrated (not by the author) and the content is useful and compelling.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Not applicable

What does George Newbern bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I liked his style, tempo and inflections

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It encouraged me to be thoughtful.

Any additional comments?

This is worth reading. The Corner 1-4 discussions sometimes get a bit complicated, but stick with it and the books value becomes clear.

Which Corner Are You In?

It's just as important as who is in your corner. And it's critical that you both operate within the correct corner. This is an unbelievably insightful book. Dr. Cloud is masterful in pulling things into focus. Chapter 11 is MUST READ/MUST LISTEN for everyone that matters in your life. That chapter alone is priceless.

*There is an audio glitch in chapter 10 around the 32:27 mark. Hopefully they will update the file.

Slow Start; Strong Finish

The story was hard to get into at the beginning. as I continue to listen, I became more engaged with the material it's probably worth going back and listening to those first few chapters again.

Dr Cloud is better than ever

I've read lot of his books, and let's be honest, how many different ways can you say a lot of the same things! A lot! This one hit home for me, taking responsibility for self, yet not being a self made (wo)man. It's too easy to take books and apply them to 'how can I be or do better for myself' ... Self help can only go so far and Dr Cloud brings it home in his newest book. I was also super impressed how this theology heavy Dr didn't seem to use much bible points in this book, he used bible principles. And what better way to bring the Truth then by using it and showing examples of it practically. This is a good book for anyone looking to push themselves to greater places for growth.

Great Guide book on Maneuvering through life.

I enjoyed this audio book so much I'm gonna purchase the physical book to have in my library. It's also a book that I'm gonna give as future wedding gifts to aid in marriages and rearing children. It's definitely a guide book of sorts for establishing relationships. It's a book one needs to read in high school.

Dr. Cloud is Better Than Ever!

At the ripe age of 60, I have been banging my head against the wall in personal relationships and especially in business relationships. My energy had begun declining yet the demands placed upon myself by poor relational choices had me working more hours than at any point in my life. I knew that there was an answer, and there was! I had dissociated in my review of relationships and taken an "it can't be that bad" approach. It can be that bad! Proverbs tells us that if we ask for wisdom, God will grant it and that it is "worth more than gold." God does not withhold on our needs, and Dr. Cloud delivers with this one. I have simply been a fool in the quality of relationships I allow and negligent in any form of ongoing goal setting or conflict management. The text is loaded with storytelling while at the same time giving crystal clear steps and checklist. And so far, it's working wonderfully in my life. I wish the same for you! Mark Collins

very helpful

This book took me by surprise--- thankfully so. I have often considered 'needing others' to be a weakness. This work has opened a new option in life for me and stuffed my tool box with great ways to begin.

Spot On.

It doesn't get much better than this. Although, the one question I did come away asking from this book was where to find these true corner four people. Other than my wife I just don't come across very many of them.
