Robert Kegan and Lisa Laskow Lahey have found and studied such companies - deliberately developmental organizations. A DDO is organized around the conviction that organizations will best prosper when they are more deeply aligned with people's strongest motive, which is to grow.

Story
The Fearless Organization offers practical guidance for teams and organizations who are serious about success in the modern economy. With so much riding on innovation, creativity, and spark, it is essential to attract and retain quality talent, but what good does this talent do if no one is able to speak their mind? The traditional culture of "fitting in" and "going along" spells doom in the knowledge economy. Success requires a continuous influx of new ideas, new challenges, and critical thought, and the interpersonal climate must not suppress, silence, ridicule, or intimidate.

Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In recent months, the pandemic has forced us all to reevaluate our assumptions about health and safety and multiple acts of police brutality have challenged most of us to reconsider our responsibility for fighting racism. Yet in our daily lives, too many of us still favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt.

To lead is to live dangerously. It's romantic and exciting to think of leadership as all inspiration, decisive action, and rich rewards, but leading requires taking risks that can jeopardize your career and your personal life. It requires putting yourself on the line, disrupting the status quo, and surfacing hidden conflict. And when people resist and push back, there's a strong temptation to play it safe. Those who choose to lead plunge in, take the risks, and sometimes get burned.

Terrible
- By Denni Rose on 17-09-19
Summary
A recent study showed that when doctors tell heart patients they will die if they don't change their habits, only one in seven will be able to follow through successfully. Desire and motivation aren't enough: even when it's literally a matter of life or death, the ability to change remains maddeningly elusive.
Given that the status quo is so potent, how can we change ourselves and our organizations?
In Immunity to Change, authors Robert Kegan and Lisa Laskow Lahey show how our individual beliefs - along with the collective mindsets in our organizations - combine to create a natural but powerful immunity to change. By revealing how this mechanism holds us back, Kegan and Lahey give us the keys to unlock our potential and finally move forward. And by pinpointing and uprooting our own immunities to change, we can bring our organizations forward with us.
This persuasive and practical book, filled with hands-on diagnostics and compelling case studies, delivers the tools you need to overcome the forces of inertia and transform your life and your work.

It’s a simple book written by very clever people adopting a scientific method to unravel the cognitive difficulties ( our assumptions) of our behavior.
I feel very close to the compassionate approach to the anxiety and insecurity that changing a mindset can induce

Made me want to read it in print
There were many great stories and examples throughout this book that made it enjoyable to listen to. But ultimately, it’s a book about how to change yourself at work and may be best experienced by reading on the page with pen in hand to take notes, answer questions about yourself related to the subject their discussing. I actually did buy the paperback book of their weight-loss related follow-up book, and found theirs such a powerful and yet easy system to identify why it’s hard for you to change and figure out ways to actually make changes happen. Really great material, possibly that everyone should be learning about around high school age!

Constantly referencing to the bonus pdf
This book doesn’t lend itself to being transcribed to an audiobook as it references charts and tables in order to make its point. Often dancing around the point instead of leading with that and justifying using examples. It’s a shame since the content seems novel and interesting. If I had to do it again, I’d buy a cliff notes version of the book

love this subject
this is the first book I've listened to or even read on this incredibly fascinating subject. it was well done and perfectly presented. I binged it in 2 days and my mind started to wander in the last hour, but likely due to the heaviness of the subject and my own brain function. good thing I can go back and listen again! I've used the exercise to uncover a block and found deeper reasons, just as they talk about here. I have also used this method with a coaching client with the same incredible results. can't say enough good things.
