About this listen

‘Am I normal?’
‘What’s an anxiety disorder?’
‘Does therapy work?’

These are just a few of the questions Natasha Devon is asked as she travels the UK campaigning for better mental health awareness and provision. Here, Natasha calls upon experts in the fields of psychology, neuroscience and anthropology to debunk and demystify the full spectrum of mental health. From A (Anxiety) to Z (Zero F**ks Given – or the art of having high self-esteem) via everything from body image and gender to differentiating ‘sadness’ from ‘depression’.

Statistically, one in three of us will experience symptoms of a mental illness during our lifetimes. Yet all of us have a brain, and so we ALL have mental health – regardless of age, sexuality, race or background. The past few years have seen an explosion in awareness, yet it seems there is still widespread confusion. A Beginner's Guide to Being Mental is for anyone who wants to have this essential conversation, written as only Natasha - with her combination of expertise, personal experience and humour - knows how.

This audiobook contains a bonus interview between Natasha Devon and Jonny Benjamin, author of The Stranger on the Bridge.

This book is the closest thing we’ve got to a Haynes manual for mental health we’ve got. Helped me immensely, thanks ND!

Powerful reading, should be prescribed by GPs

great and accessible book that is full of helpful real world advice and isn't afraid to point the finger at the political and societal problems that underline so many mental health issues

really great book

Awesome book, I can give it no higher praise than to say I need to read it again immediately and take notes.

Very empowering. Well read. Easy to understand even with idiosyncratic references. Humouress yet serious tones compliment each other. Nice nods to other relevant publications also. Memorable for all the right reasons.

Recommend to anyone who has mentally health difficulties or knows someone who does. This knowledge is worth it

I got this book as I’ve been struggling a lot with anxiety and I need to look for new ways to help me understand and try and cope. This was a great listen and the delivery was spot on. The only thing I would say is that it’s not a self help book but it is a way of understanding your mental health. Although it hasn’t helped me ‘cure’ my anxiety, it has just helped me know it more and it does have some useful tips to cope with it especially on a bad day!! This is definitely worth a listen if you want a better understanding of what goes on in your head whatever mental health problem you have.

Great way to understand mental health

This book bridges the gap between extremely important and essential. Entertainingly narrated and cleverly constructed, it is a concise, approachable and compelling outline of themes that everyone should make themselves familiar with. If more people read this book, we could be on the way to a better society.

Essential

Loved it, couldn't put it down. I believe it should of contained more about disabled people (other than mental illness) intersectionality.

Brilliant!

This book is not just for people with mental health problems. It's for everyone.

Everyone should read (or listen) to this book.

I completely enjoyed this book, especially as it was read by the author. I found her openness, knowledge and humour made me want to keep listening to what is a book about such a serious, yet ,very commonplace subject. Her ability to make you feel comfortable with the knowledge that, whilst many of us don't fall into societies version of normal, we are all worthwhile and important people. knowledge is power, and this book imparts vast quantities of this. I also realised that being the most authentic version of myself is the best gift I can give to myself and those around me. It isn't very often that you read a book with such a positive and informative message.

Knowledge and humour makes this a page turner....
