Summary

Stop rushing into businesses born from half-baked ideas, misguided theories, and other forms of self-delusion. A lack of proper validation kills more businesses than anything else. As Joel Barker says, "Speed is only useful if you're running in the right direction." Will It Fly? will help you make sure you are clear for takeoff.

It answers questions like:

  • Does your business idea have merit?
  • Will it succeed in the market you're trying to serve, or will it just be a waste of time and resources?
  • Is it a good idea for you?

In other words, will it fly?

Chock-full of practical suggestions you can apply to your business idea today, Will It Fly? combines action-based exercises, small-scale "litmus tests", and real-world case studies with anecdotes from the author's personal experience of making money online, hosting successful podcasts, testing niche sites, and launching several online businesses.

Will It Fly? will challenge you to think critically, act deliberately, and dare greatly. You can think of the book as your business flight manual, something you can refer to for honest and straight-forward advice as you begin to test your idea and build a business that takes off and soars.

In five parts, Will It Fly? will guide you through the validation of your next business idea:

  • Part one, Mission Design, helps you make sure your target idea aligns with and supports your goals.
  • Part two, Development Lab, walks you through uncovering important details about your idea that you haven't thought about.
  • Part three, Flight Planning, is all about assessing current market conditions.
  • Part four, Flight Simulator, focuses on the actual validating and testing of an idea with a small segment of a target market.
  • Finally, Part five, All Systems Go, is to help you make sure your idea after all that will fly!

Very poor -don’t bother

Rambles on & on without saying anything. How pat flynn has badged himself as some sort of guru is beyond me. The book provides no useful information. One of the worst business books I’ve read / listened to.

Outstanding!

I purchased this book to help me organise my ideas for a new business.

It delivered, and some! I learnt so much. I already run a business in a different sector and I have been able to improve many aspects of that business too.

The free Companion Course that comes along with the book gives so much value.

I'm now a huge fan of Pat Flynn. He gives great advice but clearly has high ethics. It's not all about selling and making money but serving your customers. This ultimately leads to a more successful business, just in a way that sits more comfortably with me.

Good for real beginners

I am team Flynn, really like the content he produces. This book though is for real entry level entrepreneurs. The pace for me was painfully slow and points were dragged out. if you do have a little experience it’s a job to get to the end. Honestly though it does what it says on the tin, you should be able to answer the question about your ideas following this book

Just the guide I needed

I had the beginning of an inkling of an idea but I just couldn’t grab hold of it. Will it fly broke my musings down into digestible pieces for me to focus in on the idea. Pat Flynn’s calm and steady voice acted as the perfect guide especially when I felt overwhelmed by my idea. Thanks to this book my website for Middle-Aged Entrepreneurs is now reaching the end of the runway and is ready to fly, thanks Pat for all your support and encouragement :-)

This book is worth way, way more than its price!

This is a very actionable book, with a free companion course. Pat Flynn nails it! His ideas on customer research is worth 100 times the price of the book, alone! If you ever thought about a business idea, this book will help you test it, and also help you brainstorm additional ideas, so that you can almost guarantee success!

A sales pitch for Pat Flynn's other content

I was really hoping to get something out of this, but from almost the very beginning of this book it was blatantly obvious that Flynn's goal in writing this book is to drive traffic to his website (which requires you to register via email). All of the actions are worksheets and pen on paper activities that are A) inaccessible without registering via email on the website B) not practical to do if you're listening to this book while preoccupied with something else such as working out or driving -- which inconveniently are the only times I ever listen to audiobooks.

This might be valuable for a teenager or someone just getting into entrepreneurship, but had no value for me.

I Expected a Bit More...

I'm a huge fan of Pat Flynn's but, I must say that I expected a bit more. Pat is so very transparent in his blogs and at conferences - so I expected a bit more depth and insight.

I found myself fast forwarding through parts of chapters and feeling like I didn't really miss much because Pat was still on the same topic in much the same way. It felt like filling time until the next chapter.

Overall, I take Pat's meaning of thoughtfully planning and re-evaluating a project before determining if it will fly. Too many people take off with no concept of how to fly - Flynn counters that argument brilliantly.

Knowing what I know of Pat, I wasn't looking for a step-by-step blueprint but more of process and actionable insights that take me to the next threshold. I personally felt that this was lacking. While the blogs don't offer a blueprint - they do share steps that Pat uses to create a product or service.

You have the option to buy into Pat's detailed journey or not. I can evaluate Pat's results and determine for myself - if this is useful information - all in the time it takes to read a blog post.

Pat works hard at making sure you see him as someone relatable and family oriented - which is covered in nearly every chapter.

This book would have made a great 2-3 page entry in the Passive Income blog or even on Flynn's podcast. There is a lot of redundant information that I felt was unnecessary for this interpretation.

In the end, for me at least - this information was not as useful as I had hoped it would be,

The best guide for becoming entrepreneur

Where does Will It Fly? How to Test Your Next Business Idea So You Don't Waste Your Time and Money rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a great book! At first, I hesitated a bit. I was sure that everything had been already told in Pat's podcasts and written in the blog. That was not the case. Book not only compiles the best ideas from author's experience but include's a step-by-step guide on implementing your own business.

What did you like best about this story?

All the instructions in the book are very practical. Pat gives many examples from his own life and life of his colleagues. He shares with us not only success stories but also those in which he failed.

What does Pat Flynn bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narration is done great! Not always the author of a nice book can present his own work in a way that listener would enjoy it. I can say with the confidence: it doesn't refer to this book. Pat expressed all the excitement and enthusiasm about making value for people in a way you want to act immediately.

Any additional comments?

I recommend this book to everyone who wants to start his own business (even tiny one) but don't know how to start or do it "in a right way". You will not only find wise and helpful instructions. You will also get a lot of inspiration and desire to start right now.

Not a book!

This is more of a blog, not a book. The title was catchy but the content is just too much talk. You can enjoy the first 10 minutes of the book and the rest is just boring. Sorry, but if you are good in making a website that generates few millions, it doesn’t make you an author or experienced.

Waste of time

I started listening to this book because I thought it will provide tangable strategies to scale ideas. What this book actually turn out to be, is something close to a children's book that lacks actual business content.

It's an amazing book

It's an amazing book, especially for those who are interested in designing ideas and validating it.
Will it fly works as a step by step guide to validation process. You follow the steps reading or listening the book and there is an online companion course that shows you how Patt applied every principle on the book in his own business.
