fantastic techniques

the exercises and techniques in this book are truly powerful. I am someone who gets very easily distracted by irrelevant stimuli and it can cause a lot of problems. I especially loved learning about how technology can be used to help your concentration rather than being the distraction. I would definitely recommend to anybody who would like to become more focused!

"The beautiful art of a more intentional life"

Chandler Kitching has turned his own quest to make sense of his life into an eminently rational and readable treatise - The Ultimate Focus - on how to slay the dragon of distraction and ‘quench the soul’s’ need for greater meaning. Most of us will know the sly allure of click bait and have found ourselves being sucked into this or that worm hole to nowhere. It’s the curse of our lives online, if we are not careful. But the odds are against us. Cunning algorithms set traps for us. Research shows how our attention spans are shrinking, faster than the polar ice caps perhaps. It’s a problem, ‘attention span Armageddon,’ according to Kitching. The remedy? Focus. But how and why? ‘The Ultimate Focus’ works through the problem, referencing academic studies on behavioural science, neurology and working practices to illuminate aspects of our common predicament, in a word: distraction. Kitching adds gravitas to his case with some deftly selected quotations from timeless thinkers, including Socrates, Lincoln, and Balzac. The quotes chosen were most apt and lent a human touch to the academic insights, achieving a winning balance. The business of the treatise - expertly narrated by Sunny Patel - is, however, all about how we may organise our lives, not just to defeat distraction, but to turn the art of concentration into an end in itself, a way of life, a living art. It’s inspiring stuff. Much of the guidance given is common sense and some of it concerns specific details on workaday practices and habits, including browser blockers, types of lighting, and details on food supplements. Yet it feels as though it is a very thorough person’s take on things. There is a complete programme for anyone seeking to make radical changes to their own life. And I believe it would work and would produce measurable results, if followed with a will. You may also cherry-pick from the wealth of tips and ideas on offer. This will be my approach. Having listened to the audiobook, I am going to purchase a print version to dip into from time to time. One point I will think more about is the distinction between concentration and meditation and their relationship. And yes, I have already been practicing one technique - the practice of standing with a full glass of water held at arms length. Try it yourself. The best thing for me about this offering is the way the author views it as an art. I like that very much. That and Sunny Patel’s narration, which had the quality of a trusted advisor pouring words of wisdom into the ear of an attentive Prince. Listening to The Ultimate Focus has inspired me to re-read, or listen to Marcus Aurelius’ ‘Mediations’ - the ideal antidote to the gloom of the approaching Covid Winter. (This is an honest opinion given in return for a reviewer's copy.)

Insightful, well-read, and highly actionable

Overall, I found this book to be insightful, well-written/well-read, detailed, and (most importantly for me) highly actionable. I have the Kindle version and I've been listening to the audio version as a complement. I appreciate how the author shares his personal experience with being diagnosed with ADD and the challenges that came with it. Through those challenges it is clear he developed a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to mastering concentration and focus, and he lays out his knowledge nicely in Ultimate Focus. The three phases make it super actionable and easy to prioritize, with visualizations, affirmations, step-by-step instructions, and exercises to help put the knowledge into practice. The combination of actionable steps and explanations made it really easy for me to understand not only what to do in order to improve my concentration, but also why it works. Mental energy is a big factor in my work (I sit at the computer all day). The mental energy management tips gave me some specific actions I can take to maintain my energy throughout the day and replenish it if it gets too low. I also like how the author finished off with some mind hacks and brain training exercises. This really rounded out all of the information nicely. I’ll definitely be coming back to this book for reference as I work on implementing it more and more. In terms of the narration, I found the narrator's voice to be soothing and his pauses and inflections create a nice flow. I like British accents so that was a plus for me. In summary, the author’s knowledge of concentration/focus and the actionable tips and techniques make this an excellent handbook for anyone struggling to focus their energy and get done what they want to get done.

Accomplish more in less time.

Having spent most of my professional career as a teacher, this resource should be a mandatory read for beginning teachers. It’s a well-researched, well-written guide for teachers who work with ADD students. You now have a tool that’ll empower them to become valued contributors to our society. I personally got a lot out of Chandler’s Phase 2 that delved deep into strategies for improving one’s focus on a day-to-day basis. You’ll find the narration to be calming and re-assuring making it an easy and informative listen. If you would like to improve your productivity and ability to accomplish more in less time, then consider listening to this guide today.

Exactly what we need at this time!

This is the first audiobook I've listened to in a really long time and I've enjoyed it immensely. In addition to sharing ideas and methods, Chandler Kitching shares studies, examples, and just really makes me feel like I can succeed in reducing my distractions, forming better habits, and being more productive. It doesn't come off as preachy at all and the narrator's voice is very pleasant to listen to. I keep thinking of all the people I know who could benefit from this book and I'm definitely going to share the information so that others can enjoy it as well. VERY highly recommended!

Amazing focus resource for a distracted world!

Wow. I can't say enough good things about this book! In a world where we are constantly practicing (and sadly, mastering) being distracted, having a clear roadmap on HOW to focus is so important. When we learn to harness the ability to focus, it becomes a game-changer in life. I love that this book has so many clear, practical & actionable ideas that you can implement immediately. The bonus PDF is wonderful for people who like to consume their books in audio format, but still like to have the visual reminder as well (this is especially helpful for the "action steps" lists at the end of each chapter). This is definitely a resource I will continue to revisit. If you want to learn the invaluable skill of focus, add this to your library now!

Really helpful tips

I have always struggled with concentration and focus. This has led to anxiety and the inability to get important tasks done, like meeting deadlines. I found this book amazing! The techniques are accessible, easy to understand and implement right away. Usually, I wouldn't say I like self-help books, but this one offers a simple recipe that I can get behind and stick to without overhauling my entire life.

Significant steps to stay focused

I always try to multitask. I have never thought it affects my mind. I will try to focus only on one task genuinely and use apps to limit social-media distraction. I will work in a better lighting place and more organized place. Also, thanks for reminding me to drink the right amount of water and exercising, because I started to get bored, and I need the motivation to return to my good habits. I look forward to applying those lessons. I recommend this book to those looking to improve their focus and creativity.
