Summary

Prosperous, and the secret that it hides beneath its ruins...

The community of Prosperous, Maine has always thrived when others have suffered. Its inhabitants are wealthy, its children's future secure. It shuns outsiders. It guards its own. And at the heart of Prosperous lie the ruins of an ancient church, transported stone by stone from England centuries earlier by the founders of the town... But the death of a homeless man and the disappearance of his daughter draw the haunted, lethal private investigator Charlie Parker to Prosperous.

Parker is a dangerous man, driven by compassion, by rage, and by the desire for vengeance. In him the town and its protectors sense a threat graver than any they have faced in their long history, and in the comfortable, sheltered inhabitants of a small Maine town, Parker will encounter his most vicious opponents yet. Charlie Parker has been marked to die so that Prosperous may survive.

Thought it was getting good but then it didn't

Had four hours left and gave up. I felt there were too many threads of story with not enough substance to any. Nine were a real lead story and the character building was not very good. In fact I would be hard pressed to remember any names let alone detail of any character.

John Connolly

I like John Connolly's 'Charlie Parker' books. Have read his books over the years and must say this is one of his best. Loved the story line, with a very good narrator to make it enjoyable to listen to.

Excellent

Once again a great listen to a master storyteller. The saga of Charlie Parker is building towards a mesmerising climax. How much longer Charlie and his friends can go on battling unseen and supernatural forces reminds to be seen. There is still another book in the series which I can't wait to start. The wolf in winter was a great story and as always Jeff Harding narration was excellent. However I do think the listener would benefit from having read or listened to other books in the series as it may not always make sense if you are not familiar with the past. Highly recommend.

Stop the voices!

Great story but the delivery of the dialogue undermines it. Everyone but the protagonist sounds like they're from a bad cartoon.

Great story. Horrible narrator

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator

How could the performance have been better?

Get someone who can read the female character's dialogue without making them sound like evil Digimon

Weird!

I'm not familiar with this author so didn't know what to expect, although the preview sounded interesting.
The story is weird, borders on science-fi and refers to characters in previous books. I won't be seeking them out.
Jeff Harding does his usual excellent narration and full marks for not snorting in derision at some of the daftest sections of this very forgettable tale.

Wonderful story

Another great book by John Connolly I enjoyed Jeff Harding reading as usual, think Jeff and Parker go hand in hand now, for those who know the Charlie Parker series its no surprise how good the story developed, I have read all the books and the audio versions bring them alive
