About this listen

“You’re going to hell, Jack Nightingale”: They are words that ended his police career. Now Jack’s a struggling private detective – and the chilling words come back to haunt him.

Nightingale’s life is turned upside down the day that he inherits a mansion from a man who claims to be his father. It comes with a warning that Nightingale’s soul was sold at birth and a devil will come to claim it on his 33rd birthday – just three weeks away.

Jack doesn’t believe in Hell, but when people close to him start to die horribly, he is led to the inescapable conclusion that real evil may be at work. And that if he doesn’t find a way out, he’ll be damned in hell for eternity.

I really enjoyed this book. The story takes unexpected twists and turns. Different strands are brought together well at the end, ready for the next instalment. The narration is great.

I found only one real MAJOR bugbear & that was over the lead character’s unrelenting smoking of roll up cigarettes. It felt as if every paragraph began and ended with ‘he lit a cigarette’, or ‘he ground the cigarette butt under his heel’. I accept that some people smoke and that incorporating this into a novel can add atmosphere. However, I did get sick and tired of a fag being lit up or stubbed out on the floor with monotonous regularity. I carried on listening because the underlying story was worth listening too. Just be prepared if you detest the habit.

Very good, except for.........

After weeks of listening to poor or only average books and even considering that I must have listened to all the decent reads early on ( I have over 400 in my library) and on the verge of giving up, finally..... my faith is restored and I will be purchasing the next Stephen Leather immediately!

Slightly slow start but a great read(listen). Enough said hints of past Stephen Leather novels to recognise him but a refreshing new theme, plot and set of characters.

Hard to put down once momentum builds.

Stephen Leather bit not as you know him
