About this listen

The Keep is the first book in the Adversary Cycle from best-selling author F. Paul Wilson

"Something is murdering my men."

Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims.

When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore - who just happens to be Jewish - to shed some light on the mysterious happenings. And unbeknownst to anyone, there is another visitor on his way - a man who awoke from a nightmare and immediately set out to meet his destiny.

The battle has begun: On one side, the ultimate evil created by man, and on the other...the unthinkable, unstoppable, unknowing terror that man has inevitably awakened.

The Keep is a stone cold classic, so it's all the more upsetting to hear it being savaged in audio format. That you can still listen, is testament to the near-perfection of the source: what's truly terrifying is the narrator.

Everyone shouts, especially ze Germans. At one point, almost every accent sounds like Watto from the Phantom Menace, to the point where you expect the villain to say 'meesa bad guy!`.

What makes it worse is that the book describes the complexity of the characters, so it's not like the narrator doesn't have an idea of how to portray them. No, everyone shouts or snarls, or flies around saying that mind tricks don't work on them, only money. If I were a vampire I'd make the narrator immortal, so that I could torture them forever

Great book, I sought it out after seeing Michael Mann's film.
Now, for the narrator.
For the actual telling of the story, he did very well and I was absorbed. His Romanian accents seemed decent enough (to a non Romanian) however, he inexplicably gave all his German soldiers and officers clipped English accents. Very peculiar and it sometimes took you out of the story. Similar with Das Boot on Audible, all the Germans were given English and some Cockney accents.
Surely a casting director would have asked about such an important detail for the book, afterall most of the characters are German.
Do better in future.

Great Story, so so performance.

I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of the book, gets a little boring after the plot is revealed but I quickly finished it. Other reviews mention the terrible attempt at accents, the German soldiers all sound like they're pure British working class while the officers sound like Allo Allo extras but I found it very entertaining. I'll definitely be listening to the book again.

Great story, the accent's are entertaining!

I mostly enjoyed this book! Pacing is good and who doesn’t want a story about vampires and Nazis! However the character of Magda is massively irritating for me! Compared to the male characters she lacks so much and comes across as a wet blanket!!

A lot of the reviews say they didn’t enjoy the narration but I actually didn’t mind it! There are no German accents tho which considering half the characters are German is odd! But it didn’t bother me really. Overall, really enjoyed it!

Mostly enjoyable

Very strong opening, exciting premise and very strong characters. The performance is incredible and carries a huge part of my final score.
The story took some turns I did not enjoy and finished on what was to me the most predictable and boring note I could have imagined, but the overall experience is still strong.

Exciting premise and strong characters, weak finish
