Summary

The Pocket Learner is an educational system that the author developed to help her child with special educational needs. The system became an international multi-award-winning innovation, and has been extended to families across the globe to help their children build vocabulary, learn to read, and count. The author realized that several factors needed to be in place for her child to thrive in contemporary society.

First, she had to learn the hard way, battling every step of the way to access resources, therapies, and care support for her child. In addition, she had to find ways to engage her child in the home. This led her to develop the Special Education Advancement Toolkit: an inspirational, educational model and guide for parents of children struggling in their early years, or who have been diagnosed with special educational needs. It incorporates The Pocket Learner as the main resource in the toolkit.

The structure is built on six principles represented by the acronyms hope, faith, gentle(ness), joy, love, and peace. The framework revolves around the child: the star, fruit of the womb endowed with innate abilities and gifts. The toolkit covers the range of roles, responsibilities, and activities that families and other relevant parties must implement.

The program consists of six P's:

  • Perception: The journey into HOPE technique.
  • Preparation: The accelerated FAITH roadmap.
  • Participation: The GENTLE approach solution.
  • Progress: The JOY generator toolkit.
  • Patience: The LOVE game strategy.
  • Potential: The PEACE promotion formula.

Zig Ziglar said, “When you put faith, hope, and love together, you can raise positive kids in a negative world.” When you add gentleness, joy, and peace, you raise a balanced, confident child armed with the mindset, skills, and competencies to take their appropriate place in society.

Wisdom for Every Journey

This is a gentle yet powerful guide for parents and caregivers. This audiobook doesn't promise miracles; instead, it offers a steady hand and a compassionate voice. I could tell form the start that the author has an amazing grasp on handling special needs, it would not surprise me if she is a leader in the field. Phenomenal research and care was put into this one, I was glad to have stumbled onto it. It made me a better person today, thanks.

Full of excellent and useful information!

Raising my child with special needs, deluded by my love, I really sometimes go overboard with helping him. This book has encouraged me to give it more freedom, and I hope one day, "maybe one day it will even own the pond!" One read is not enough, so I am happy that there is also a PDF attached so I can have it in front of my eyes.
This helpful book contains tips and ways for our special needs children to be more independent in this troubled world.

Parents Buy this Book!

This is a must read for all parents and educators. Before I became a high school math teacher, my step-grandson was struggling in school because of his health issues. He was a type-1 diabetic. He was refused services in middle school and was sent to independent study home studies because the school nurse would not let him administer a shot unless he went home. No one had told us about an IEP or 504 plan. We could have demanded that he stay in school but no one even mentioned this service. When I became a teacher some 5 years later I became angry when I found out about this in my studies to become a teacher. This is a must read for any parent especially if your child is struggling in school or who has already been tested and is receiving services. There are also too many students who are receiving services and were diagnosed wrongly.

Empowers Caregivers

This audiobook is invaluable for parents and caregivers of children with special educational needs and disabilities. The author uses her own experiences and shares a learning system that helped her child. Having been a teacher for many years, this book would have been a great resource. It provides a comprehensive and compassionate approach, offering practical advice through a “Six P’s Program.” I found the narration warm and empathetic, making the content very relatable. This audiobook is a great listen because it empowers caregivers in their journey, which is so important. Highly recommended!

Helped me a lot

Both my kids have special needs (ADHD and ASE) and I'm always looking for resources to help me not reinvent the wheel every time I encounter a roadblock. The 6 Ps explained in this book is a good roadmap to navigate the tricky pathways to getting your children the right help. Thoroughly recommend.

Great resource!

Being a parent to a child with special needs, I'm aware that many others lack the crucial educational and growth resources my daughter is fortunate to have. The key to our children thriving and living their best lives lies in having knowledge of and access to these resources, allowing them to shine with their unique sparks of genius.

This audiobook is a comprehensive guide that goes beyond visible disabilities, offering invaluable insights for loving and raising all children. I can't recommend it highly enough!

A must-read for any special needs caregivers

When it comes to special needs education you can do a Google search and be quickly inundated with information. It's hard to know what actually works, what's tried and true, and how you can really be effective as a caregiver. This books takes all of that information and makes it succinct and accessible through clear, easy to understand, practical steps. You can tell the author has a passion and personal connection to this topic as she uses a lot of inspirational quotes and gives consistent encouragement. The unique piece of this book is the toolkit that is structured around six pillars. This makes it easy to evaluate yourself as a caregiver in these areas and focus on one area at a time. If you're navigating special education and disabilities in your child, I highly recommend reading this book. You'll learn a lot, and you'll feel like someone truly understands what you're going through.
