About this listen

The Pocket Learner is an educational system that the author developed to help her child with special educational needs. The system became an international multi-award-winning innovation, and has been extended to families across the globe to help their children build vocabulary, learn to read, and count. The author realized that several factors needed to be in place for her child to thrive in contemporary society.

First, she had to learn the hard way, battling every step of the way to access resources, therapies, and care support for her child. In addition, she had to find ways to engage her child in the home. This led her to develop the Special Education Advancement Toolkit: an inspirational, educational model and guide for parents of children struggling in their early years, or who have been diagnosed with special educational needs. It incorporates The Pocket Learner as the main resource in the toolkit.

The structure is built on six principles represented by the acronyms hope, faith, gentle(ness), joy, love, and peace. The framework revolves around the child: the star, fruit of the womb endowed with innate abilities and gifts. The toolkit covers the range of roles, responsibilities, and activities that families and other relevant parties must implement.

The program consists of six P's:

  • Perception: The journey into HOPE technique.
  • Preparation: The accelerated FAITH roadmap.
  • Participation: The GENTLE approach solution.
  • Progress: The JOY generator toolkit.
  • Patience: The LOVE game strategy.
  • Potential: The PEACE promotion formula.

Zig Ziglar said, “When you put faith, hope, and love together, you can raise positive kids in a negative world.” When you add gentleness, joy, and peace, you raise a balanced, confident child armed with the mindset, skills, and competencies to take their appropriate place in society.

It’s difficult to find resources that genuinely make a difference in your child's development, and this is one of those resources. It’s full of practical wisdom and support. The author's personal struggles and victories in supporting her child with special educational needs made the book seem more authentic. It’s nice to get advice from someone who has been there. The 6P’s program is something that can be revisited again and again. Definitely recommend it to any parent looking for new ways to enrich their child's early years, especially those with special needs.

This is a much-needed guide written by a parent to other parents. I love that it starts out acknowledging that being the parent to a special needs child may have been a bit of an unexpected adjustment for some of us, and allows all parents that space. Then the author gets into the real work of the book. How to best support your child with their special needs. I have an atypical child, and I found the author's tone to be friendly and empathetic and the narrator very engaging and pleasant to listen to. There is a TON of great advice in this audiobook; perhaps one of my favorites was the suggestion that you make a list of your childs' strengths (no matter what they may be) and praise them for something on the list daily. This will build their self-esteem and confidence. It may sound simple, but in the daily chaos that can accompany living with a special needs child, remembering to do a simple thing like this is beautiful.

Excellent Resource!
