Summary
Blending families can be complicated and challenging to navigate. The toolkit presented in Blended Families--Special Children explores the dynamics of stepfamilies caring for children with special needs and disabilities and presents the information in digestible nuggets ready for consumption by quintessential blended families who are juggling the demands of parenting.
You'll discover how to bond with your special stepchild and how you can recognize and embrace the differences, strengthen your family, and maintain a happy relationship with your spouse or partner so that all the children in the family unit will feel safe and content.
The 9-L model illustrated in Blended Families--Special Children explores the dynamics of stepfamilies caring for children with special needs and disabilities and presents the information in digestible nuggets ready for consumption by quintessential blended families juggling the demands of parenthood with caring for children with special needs.
Whether you have an established stepfamily or are in the early stages of a blended family, you can find value in the information presented. Here’s a synopsis of what you’ll discover:
- Launch–considerations for the early stages of your blended family
- Love–how to keep the love alive with your partner and in the family unit
- Listen–strategies for listening even when your child is nonverbal
- Laugh–techniques for building fun into your stepfamily
In addition to the 9 L’s, you’ll discover:
- State benefits you may be able to access
- The effect of challenging behavior on your stepfamily
- How cognitive disability can affect a child’s conduct
Also included is a chapter of real-life case studies from stepparents caring for disabled children. The experiences they share hold valuable lessons on issues that may arise and how they handled them in their endeavor to maintain a happy stepfamily.
The second book, Blended Family: A Guide for Stepparents outlines seven key factors that are often overlooked but have an adverse effect on stepfamilies. They are neatly arranged in the acronym BLUNDER - which is precisely what stepparents do when they fail to address or ignore the cited factors. Contemporary society is overrun with demands on parents who have to juggle various roles. But,if you pay attention to the elements outlined, the difference will be noticeable as you navigate this challenging but potentially enriching role.
And even if you think you've tried everything, consider these factors. You'll be surprised to find that these simple changes can make an impactful difference.

Excellent Book for Blending Families!
I absolutely love and appreciate this book! My husband comes from a blended family and I see a lot of what’s discussed in this book present in his family already!
The author did a great job of outlining the practical steps to helping families “blend” together effortlessly. Each chapter incorporates rock solid principles that families (even ones that aren’t blended) should abide by.
My favorite chapter was chapter 4 (Laughing)! Incorporating laughter is essential and truly helps bring the families together! Highly recommend this book for those with blended families!

Finally a book that truly understands my situation
This book is beautiful written. The narrator has so much compassion in her voice. Having a big blended family is already hard but with my beloved step-son who has special needs makes it even more difficult. The constant balance battle between children is draining and never seems to be enough. This book understands all of that and gives so many practical solutions that I never thought of and that I can start implementing today. I especially loved the idea of going out on dates with my children, allowing them to pick where, and enjoying solo time with them. My husband and I’s relationship feels stronger, equipped, and more capable after listening to this book. This was exactly the uplifting encouragement that we needed. I’ll definitely be releasing.

Very Inspiring Book
This book is one of the most compassionate and eye-opening books that I have listened to! this book has great helpful information on stepfamilies and families with special needs children. What I like the most is that the author writes from her own experience of being a mother of a disabled child in a step-family. It's a well-written book, and the information it has is very applicable to daily life.

This was both informative and inspiring
This two in book package, was a good listen. Although I’m not part of a blended family, I have close family and friends who are, and thought it would be useful to equip myself to better understand their challenges and how to support them.
This book did not disappoint. I love the discussion around the importance of good communication, and that it’s not enough just to avoid conflict but to proactively seek to create a good safe environment that does not engender it.
I think sometimes we forget that children are little human beings, and though they might not have the same language level yet as us, it’s important to communicate with them in a way that shows respect and teaches them how to reciprocate.
Worth the listen.

The perfect books for a blended family
Having a basic family with mom, dad, and children is hard enough. The step up from that is when you have a special needs or disabled child, and/or including being a step-parent. These are all incredible blessings to have in the home if you think of it that way, but definitely challenging. I loved these two books because it lays out what life is like and the things you should and more importantly shouldn't do.

Truly Resonated With Me
As someone who grew up in what we now call a 'blended family' before the term even existed, I can attest to the challenges and complexities involved. This audiobook offers a comprehensive toolkit for navigating the unique dynamics of stepfamilies caring for children with special needs. From bonding with stepchildren to maintaining a harmonious relationship with your partner, every aspect is covered with practical advice and real-life case studies. The 9-L model and the BLUNDER acronym provide valuable frameworks for addressing the complexities of blended family life. As a life coach who works with families, I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone navigating the intricate journey of blended family life.
