Summary

Sometimes the most picturesque of places can hide the cruellest killer.

Young Billy Jones comes from a notorious family of drunks and thieves. So, when he fails to return home it's hardly a surprise.

However, when mutilated remains are found it becomes apparent that a savage executioner is stalking the untamed, windswept moorland that surround this northern town.

The clues lead DS Lasser directly to the poverty-stricken Radfield family who once owned great swathes of local land.

When another body is discovered, Lasser's convictions are thrown into turmoil. Someone is playing a vicious game, someone with a burning hatred for the Radfield family.

The body count rises and Lasser finds himself enmeshed in a tangled web of deceit as he tries to unravel the dark, twisted secrets that bind two families. Secrets stretching back over four decades, blackmail and murder reaching out to ensnare the innocent as well as the guilty.

Wow!

I have read all Robin’s books and I’m thrilled they are now in audio! Even if you have read the book you are in for a treat! Great narration brings it to life! Superb!

Great

Brilliant book. Considering it’s a first book in a series they will get better & better. I wasn’t too sure about the narrator at first, one of the characters accent really grated but once I was in the flow I didn’t notice too much. Great plot & storyline, I even felt sorry for the protagonist.

Get over the first chapter and your hooked

honestly the guy trying to be a tean in first part of the book made me want to put it down. But get over that and it's so twisted and a fantastic read, or listen in my case.

It's brilliant to read a good crime novel

To have a book set locally makes the story even better. You can picture everything they are taking about. A good crime series with enough twists to keep you going.

At last - Lasser on Audible!

Delighted to find Robin Roughley on the list. Not for those who prefer their crime in the cosy category. It probably helps to have experience of the glories of Lancashire weather, too. The Lasser books are decidedly rough and ready, and the crimes tend to be bloody and basic, but the series is good on character development and has a certain humour. I really hope the rest will be offered in due course.

Not 100% sure about the narrator - he sometimes sounds a bit robotic, and when reading speech is a bit too slow: we northerners can and do speak at the usual speed. But by and large he's made a fair fist of the job.

I enjoyed The Needle House, and look forward to The Way That It Falls. Soon, please!
