About this listen

DI Nikki Galena's close friend Helen Brook is involved in a serious accident where she is trapped in a collapsed cellar. After her hard-won recovery, Helen is still getting flashbacks to a man she says was down there with her and who confessed to a murder. But no trace of this man can be found.

Then Helen tells Nikki that someone is watching her. But is all this in her friend's imagination and part of her post-traumatic stress?

And why is Stephen Cox back in town? He's the villain who tore Nikki's life apart and he seems to have returned to wreak more chaos. Before long, the whole town is on the verge of hysteria and her friend's fear will lead Nikki and Joseph on a very dangerous trail.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you in suspense until its heart-stopping conclusion.

Even though the narration is poor the story line is excellent. The story deals with current issues in the context of a police drams. I have listened to the previous books and was hoping when this was released it would have a change of narrator. Even so a good listen I enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot unexpected ending kept me guessing to the last.

Couldn't stop listening!

I've enjoyed this series of books, having listened to the first five so far, but they are let down by the narrator. I don't really know where to start with it. She can't manage any sort of accent at all. Her attempt to voice an Irish character in an earlier book went all over the place but sadly nowhere near Ireland! The female characterisations are really shrill which starts to grate on you after a while and is surprising given that the narrator's voice itself is quite mellow when just reading the non-speaking parts of the narrative. I'm also beginning to wonder if these recordings are edited in any way because the number of everyday words that are pronounced in a truly unique way is frankly astounding. In this book they also confused the names of characters at a couple of points, though I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and put that down to poor editing of the written version. However the stories themselves are very good and up to the standard I've come to expect from Joy Ellis, if you can get past the dubious narration they're definitely worth the effort.

Good stories, shame about the narration

Absolutely love this series of books. The story was gripping, the characters likeable and the narration excellent. Glad there are more to listen to as just can't stop once I've started one and am getting through them at a rate of notts.

Amazing!

Great story as ever but, and it’s a huge but - narration is a nightmare.

Bad enough in the car but with earphones I can feel my teeth vibrating to the sound of absolutely all of the female voices.

The narrator, when not voicing characters is fine and the story would be brilliant at this pitch.

Please change the narrator.

Aargh my ears are bleeding

Great story, but once again horrendous accents and mispronunciation of commonplace words. Most notably, Nikki Galena’s Mother has suddenly developed dreadful, flat vowels but in the previous book she spoke like someone from the 1940’s BBC. Don’t be put off by the narration as it’s a brilliant storyline

Another great novel from Joy Ellis
