Story
Revellers are flocking into Greenborough for the yearly Dark Greenborough Festival, a three-day event celebrating local folklore, superstition, and the darker side of life. What the public doesn't know is that there has been a warning sent to the police, saying that Greenborough will be a very dangerous place this year. The anonymous letter ends with the Latin phrase, Mors certa, hora incerta: Death is certain, the hour uncertain.

After my second husband bails without a word, I’m moving back to my hometown, San Marcos, Florida, one of the nation’s oldest cities. I’m here to open a nearly 300-year-old inn and hopefully begin a new life. It turns out the inn comes with ghosts and other supernatural features. And the paranormal in my genes is going haywire. By touching an object, I can read the thoughts and emotions of other people who have touched it. Sweet emotions as well as memories of murder.

Has the author literally lost the plot? And as for the narrator…
I’ve been binge listening to this series. All along the bizarre pronunciation by the narrator has really grated at times, and then in the last book Nikki seemed at times to discover her Scottish roots in her Norfolk accent…. But then along comes Fire on the fens.
The author seems to have forgotten that when Nikki and Joseph got together they were deemed a strange pairing not least because of his very strong religion. ‘The priest’ I believe he was called at one point in book 1 or 2 contrasting with Nikki’s single minded hunting of all things drug.
But in this book the narrator says Joseph is not really religious. Really? Did he have some sort of faith crisis that has been kept from us?
And then there is the increasingly bizarre pronunciation- not being able to pronounce ‘curate’ among so many other things has meant I’ve finally thrown in the towel.
Whatever happens to you Nikki and Joseph I hope you find someone who can correctly pronounce whatever it is! Good luck!

This series is fantastic and gets better and better with every book. As the series progresses each book gets more gripping. This one really kept me guessing and the way the team work so well together is amazing. There constant determination to not give up and find out the truth is really well portrayed and makes you want to know what is happening. It is great to see more permanant supporting characters coming into the series to enhance what is already a good team. The character development is also fantastic and a great draw for the series.

Please, Henrietta, check your pronunciation!
I have to return this book. I've put up with Ms Meire's mispronunciations and false wordstresses in other Galena books for long enough. But having 'curate' (the noun) pronounced as cuREIT (the verb) was just toooo much. Add deSULtory and mischievIous??? and many many others... Doesn't Ms Ellis have any say about who reads her books and how?

Fire Within Bested the Fire Outside
Another fascinating detective story. Fire is both literally and figuratively described. The story shows the destructive, cleansing, transformative, & inspirational aspects of "fire". The obvious destruction in the structures and those effected with a loss is clearly seen. Sparked within each character is the determination and the internal questions about life. Law enforcement runs toward danger, and make personal sacrifices everyday. That is the law enforcement I know. Love the cross over characters and stories from Joy Ellis's Jackman/Evans series. Great narration as always.
