About this listen

Jane Austen's most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters.

The narration by Emilia Fox is outstanding, it was difficult to stop listening. I will have to listen many times.

Lovely to have a story properly read. Pure enjoyment of allowing the imagination to formulate the scenes and characters as the plot developes. A female English accent to add a proper atmosphere...Bliss!

Love this story you really get into the relationship of the characters there misconceptions and pre judgments but as they get to know the people they see what they are truly like

Love it

It has been quite a while since reading this novel. I love listening and getting lost in the story. I have completely forgotten the period dramas which can never do the characters justice.
Emilia Fox is a wonderful narrator.

Would you listen to Pride and Prejudice again? Why?

Yes! It is simply one of my favourite books.

What did you like best about this story?

As well as a happy ending arrived via an interesting route, the characters are wonderful. Most of the protagonists are extreme - very good, very wicked, hysterical, laconic - it's a wonderful commentary on life in Jane Austen's time, but also relevant to today in many ways.

What about Emilia Fox’s performance did you like?

I have to say, I have been a bit disappointed with Emilia Fox's performance. I partly chose this edition because she was in the famous BBC adaption, where every character was bought to life splendidly, but some of her reading seems lacklustre. She does seem to 'warm up' by the end - Mrs Benet assumes some of the hilarious hysteria that Amanda Steadman brought to her - but for much of the book, it is rather pallid reading. However, it is clear, articulate and of course, the words that she reads are superb.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I wouldn't make a film of this, I'd just say "Get the 1995 BBC adaption!"

This book has always been a favourite and Emilia Fox reads it very well. I really enjoy listening to it

Familiar book well read

As the previous reviewer states, the narrator brings this story to life. Through her skill, you are transported into world Jane Austin has created.

I came to this story more out of curiosity through its fame as a literary work but was thoroughly impressed by both the quality of the presentation and the story itself. Highly recommended!

Any additional comments?

Andrew Davis's wonderful TV adaptation with such a memorable and brilliant cast took such a hold on us that sometimes you think it's the same as re-reading the whole book. Of course, it's not.

At first I found it a bit sticky to get into, even the gifted Emilia Fox not quite bringing it to life for me, but that didn't last long. As the book warmed up, so did her narration. By the time we'd reached halfway I couldn't wait to get out of the office at night and get into the car to continue listening.

I was ashamed to realise how much fine detail I'd forgotten from the book, perhaps blinded by Colin Firth's dazzling white shirt. Well worth revisiting, thoroughly recommended.

Sometimes it's good to revisit the entire book

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite classics but Emilia Fox's reading is excellent. At no time did her delivery flag and her changes of voices were just right. Well done for bringing an excellent classic and an excellent reader together and entertaining the listener.

Excellent story and well read
