About this listen

A collection of BBC radio full-cast dramatisations of Jane Austen's six major novels. Jane Austen is one of the finest writers in the English language, and this volume includes all six of her classic novels.

Mansfield Park: on a quest to find a position in society, Fanny Price goes to live with her rich aunt and uncle.

Northanger Abbey: young, naïve Catherine Morland receives an invitation to stay at the isolated Gothic mansion Northanger Abbey.

Sense and Sensibility: forced to leave their family home after their father's death, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood try to forge a new life at Barton Cottage.

Pride and Prejudice: Mrs Bennet is determined to get her five daughters married well, so when the wealthy Mr Bingley and his friend, Mr Darcy, move into the neighbourhood, her hopes are raised....

Emma: Emma Woodhouse declares she will never marry, but she is determined to find a match for her friend, Harriet.

Persuasion: eight years ago, Anne Elliot rejected a marriage proposal from a handsome but poor naval officer. Now her former love has returned....

With an all-star cast including David Tennant, Benedict Cumberbatch, Julia McKenzie, Jenny Agutter, Toby Jones, Eve Best and Juliet Stevenson, these BBC radio adaptations are full of humour, romance, love lost and love regained. Duration: approx. 14 hours 30 mins.

What made the experience of listening to The Jane Austen BBC Radio Drama Collection the most enjoyable?

I know the books very well and enjoy hearing them adapted as radio plays

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

I liked some of the performances more than others. The stories are so familiar that I
have an idea as to how the character should sound and this was not always to my liking

Any additional comments?

This is a really good listen, not just for one time but I can see myself listening regularly. Jane Austen is always a comfort.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you are a fan of Jane Austen and have read her books and would love to hear them being performed, this is for you. The characters take you to the times of Austen and the lavishes and settings of the era.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Each actor of the various stories takes you to the imagination and the portrayal is immense

Stunning Performances From All Involved

I mostly loved this set of radio plays.. if I had any problems at all it was getting accustomed to the voices which matches neither the voices from my imagination while reading the books nor the actors from any of the dramatisations I've seen, that said, I really did enjoy the listening experience and, to my shame for being unaware of and then delight at discovering Persuasion I am most delighted.

classic storytelling

This is a collection of abridged versions of Jane Austen's work, dramatized (originally for radio I think). As someone who has read most of the books in this collection, it was easy to revisit these as they were very well acted, and memory filled the missing parts. I had never read Persuasion, and I found myself longing for more depth of story while I listened. Overall, I would recommend this, but beware that each book is very much abridged.

An Easy Listen - if you know the books
