Summary

In his Alpine base, Blofeld is developing biological weapons that will devastate Britain. Unaware of the danger, James Bond is about to marryTeresa di Vicenzo, the daughter of a Corsican Mafioso. But then he is sent to Switzerland. Bond’s marriage and Blofeld’s schemes disintegrate in a blizzard of gunfire and high-explosives from which neither man emerges the victor.

Includes an exclusive bonus interview with David Tennant.

Ian Fleming was born in London in 1908. He was educated at Eton and worked as a journalist in Moscow and a banker and stockbroker in London before becoming personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. He wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952 at Goldeneye, his home in Jamaica. Since then James Bond has gone on to become a global phenomenon.

David Tennant has won critical acclaim for his performance as Detective Alec Hardy in the hugely successful crime drama Broadchurch, a role he is soon to reprise in the upcoming American remake, Gracepoint. He shot to global fame during his tenure as the Tenth Doctor in the Doctor Who series, and has starred in a number of other award winning films and television shows, including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Single Father. On stage he has played Benedick in Much Ado about Nothing, as well as the title roles in Hamlet and Richard II.

Loved it

Listened to this with the family on the dread Christmas journey, which takes four hours. They asked for it to be put on as soon as we started the journey home - praise indeed! David Tennant really brings the book to life with an astonishing array of accents, and Ian Fleming's attention to detail when describing cars, action or people was excellent. Almost thought I was in France in a white Lancia instead of rain-sodden Britain in a Volvo (sigh...)

O.H.M.S.S.

Really enjoyed this book and loved David Tennant as the narrator. Surprised me how close the film stayed to the book (the book is still better though). A nice amount of detail which I always listen for and enjoy - Tracy's Lancia sports car being equipped with De Dion rear suspension while Bonds Bentley makes do with a fixed rear axle ; the description of the food and meals - for example. It starts as a typical Bond adventure but with subtle twists starts to change leading to the very untypical Bond ending.
Well worth listening to. Enjoy.

If you love Bond you will love this.

David Tennant narrates this book so well. When you hear this audio book you will realise just how good the original stories are.

One of the very best Bond Stories. Superb narration

David Tennant's narration is second to none. His characterisation of Marc-Ange Draco is one of the best audiobook characterisations I've ever heard. Also because Mr Tennant is Scottish, he is able to give a very true accent to Bond when in the story he has to assume the role of Sir Hilary Bray. "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is in my opinion one of the best Bond books, and of those I have so far heard as audiobooks, is the finest narration.

Great story and narration

I've listened to most of the Bond books now and this is one of my favourites. The story is good but what made it for me was David Tennant's narration. He really brings the story to life and drew me right into it, bringing the characters to life. I would definitely recommend this cracking read!

The Best Bond

Being English I was brought up on the Bond Films but i confess i had never read the books. Well i'm putting that right now, I've been on a Bond Binge and it's been great. Fleming is a really great writer especially his powers description. There are criticisms Fleming is a bit too keen to show off his knowledge of good restaurants and hotel rooms and yes he is a product of his time, there are words and opinions that you should prepare yourselves for but this is the book with the least amount of that sort of things.
This is IMHO the best Bond novel, yes it's technically part two of a three part story but that doesn't matter it's a tort, fast paced thriller with great 'edge of your seat' action and the best version of the ultimate Bond baddie. If you've never read a Bond novel start here.
