Summary

In his Alpine base, Blofeld is developing biological weapons that will devastate Britain. Unaware of the danger, James Bond is about to marryTeresa di Vicenzo, the daughter of a Corsican Mafioso. But then he is sent to Switzerland. Bond’s marriage and Blofeld’s schemes disintegrate in a blizzard of gunfire and high-explosives from which neither man emerges the victor.

Ian Fleming was born in London in 1908. He was educated at Eton and worked as a journalist in Moscow and a banker and stockbroker in London before becoming personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. He wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952 at Goldeneye, his home in Jamaica. Since then James Bond has gone on to become a global phenomenon.

David Tennant has won critical acclaim for his performance as Detective Alec Hardy in the hugely successful crime drama Broadchurch, a role he is soon to reprise in the upcoming American remake, Gracepoint. He shot to global fame during his tenure as the Tenth Doctor in the Doctor Who series, and has starred in a number of other award winning films and television shows, including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Single Father. On stage he has played Benedick in Much Ado about Nothing, as well as the title roles in Hamlet and Richard II.

Loved it

Listened to this with the family on the dread Christmas journey, which takes four hours. They asked for it to be put on as soon as we started the journey home - praise indeed! David Tennant really brings the book to life with an astonishing array of accents, and Ian Fleming's attention to detail when describing cars, action or people was excellent. Almost thought I was in France in a white Lancia instead of rain-sodden Britain in a Volvo (sigh...)

For your ears only

Gripping from the start to the shattering, poignant closing scene, this is the 2nd book in Fleming’s ‘Blofeld’ trilogy: Thunderball, OHMSS, and You Only Live Twice. It focuses more than previous titles on Bond’s emotional life, and the plot concerns his obsessive vendetta with capturing Blofeld, who in this novel has taken residence in a remote mountaintop lair. The overlong film, with a decidedly patchy performance by George Lazenby, is surprisingly loyal to the novel, including some dialogue. Tennant narrates in ‘received pronunciation’ - only reverting to his Scottish accent in the interview following the audiobook - but his passion for Bond is evident, and he brings the material alive. One of my favourite Bond novels for its ambition in giving its hero a private life beyond the casual encounters for which he’s famous (although they do feature in OHMSS). Listen out for a celebrity sighting at Blofeld’s lair (inspired by the Dr No film). Fleming gave Bond Scottish ancestry (explored in OHMSS) in tribute to Sean Connery’s portrayal of Bond in Dr No, and died just before the release of the Goldfinger movie, in 1964.

O.H.M.S.S.

Really enjoyed this book and loved David Tennant as the narrator. Surprised me how close the film stayed to the book (the book is still better though). A nice amount of detail which I always listen for and enjoy - Tracy's Lancia sports car being equipped with De Dion rear suspension while Bonds Bentley makes do with a fixed rear axle ; the description of the food and meals - for example. It starts as a typical Bond adventure but with subtle twists starts to change leading to the very untypical Bond ending.
Well worth listening to. Enjoy.

excellent reading of a very good story

A very enjoyable listen. David Tennant is a revelation, a superb story teller. I'll be looking out for more stories read by him.

One of the very best Bond Stories. Superb narration

David Tennant's narration is second to none. His characterisation of Marc-Ange Draco is one of the best audiobook characterisations I've ever heard. Also because Mr Tennant is Scottish, he is able to give a very true accent to Bond when in the story he has to assume the role of Sir Hilary Bray. "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is in my opinion one of the best Bond books, and of those I have so far heard as audiobooks, is the finest narration.

If you love Bond you will love this.

David Tennant narrates this book so well. When you hear this audio book you will realise just how good the original stories are.

A unique Bond story

My first reading of a Bond book, and I haven't seen the earlier movies. Not being a fan of the gleefully misogynist acting styles, I was a little worried that this would spoil the experience. No need!
The excellent narration by David Tennant, both a reading and a master class in voice acting, creates a charming and sympathetic rogue. He really draws you in, like watching the scenes in your head.

Great story and narration

I've listened to most of the Bond books now and this is one of my favourites. The story is good but what made it for me was David Tennant's narration. He really brings the story to life and drew me right into it, bringing the characters to life. I would definitely recommend this cracking read!

Excellent reading by D Tennant, but the audio ...

This is what you would expect from Ian Fleming and expertly read by David Tennant but it was spoiled by some poor audio. I checked this wasn't my device and listened on my iPhone, with headphones and on desktop speaker, all with the same result. A slight clicking heard at the end of words would seem to indicate a recording issue. Some of you may not hear this and it will depend on the frequencies you can hear. Other than this, an excellent book.
