Summary

Madame Maigret takes the lead in a disturbing investigation in this new translation, book 34 of the Maigret series. Inspector Maigret's wife turns sleuth after a strange encounter in a Paris square leads her on the trail of a woman in a white hat and towards a grisly tale of deception and greed.

A more team-based case in which two usually background characters step into the spotlight with Maigret.

Another decent Maigret story with the usual convolutions that our hero slowly makes sense of. For once, all the police team are involved, with LaPointe taking the honours for his industry. Mme Maigret has an excellent turn with the detective skills as well, which makes a change from her more background role as a wife.
If you enjoy the Maigret stories, you will enjoy this, too. It was good to have a greater sense of teamwork than usual, knowing that our hero’s brain was working away as ever.

SIMPLY BRILLIANT!

Simenon never ceases to amaze me. His Chief Inspector Maigret is the most human and humane character in all of detective fiction, equalled by the wondrous narration of the incomparable Gareth Armstrong.

Engaging motley European cast of characters

I enjoyed that Madame Louise Maigret had a more prominent role in this Maigret policier. Classic use of Parisian neighbourhoods and streets which Simenon employs to give the story great atmosphere. I was hooked from the start especially by the Belgian book binder. Exceedingly well read by Gareth Armstrong.
I was a little let down by the denouement but still highly recommend it.

Another Wonderful Maigret Story

Chief Inspector Maigret is a fabulous character, and I adore his relationship with Madame Maigret.
The plots are great and the narration superb.
