This review is written after listening to the audio version of this book.

This is my first book in a series which has been going for some time, based on the fact that readers/listeners keep coming back to it I decided to give this book a chance, I'm glad I did as I enjoyed it and now have a new author to follow.

This story is set in Seahouses on the Northumbrian coast and around the Farne Islands and as that's a part of the UK I've been told a lot about and always wanted to visit it did make it more interesting for me. DCI Ryan gets drawn into the world of marine archaeology and the ruthless world of deep-sea diving for wrecks.

Iain Tucker has been diving close to the Farne Islands and knows the area well. He's a Marine Archaeologist who is based at Durham University, he believes that there is a wreck of a Viking longboat close by and arranges to meet his colleague Dr. Anna Taylor-Ryan at a local pub, The Cockle Inn to discuss his thoughts/findings. But Anna waits for him in vain, he fails to show and can't be found.

Ryan and his team are sent details of an unidentified male body washed up on the rocks at Longstone Lighthouse in the outer group of the Farne Islands. On investigation into the identity of the body much more than expected comes to light as his team has to deal with the local inhabitants and their secrets. There is an important historical find but who should take the credit for it?

The story is an intriguing mystery which gives us some interesting historical information as a background to this well written, intriguing and engrossing plot which is fraught with danger, drama, and secrets.

All the characters were well drawn, and apart from the main characters I especially liked Gemma and Hutch who run The Cockle Inn who are so necessary to this story which had me on the edge of my seat and kept me guessing right up to the end. As this is my first foray into these stories I wasn't totally up to scratch with the backstories of the main characters but that in no way impeded my enjoyment of this great story set in the beautiful and wild setting which is described so well by the author.

The narration was very well done by Jonathan Keeble he hit every character just right and added to my enjoyment of this well written and interesting story.

I was given a copy of this audiobook as a gift and am voluntarily writing my review.

Intriguing Storyline

I expected the killer early but still the author was so convincing that my doubts were completely wiped out and I jumped on every red herring. It wasn’t too much concentrated on the team and personal stuff this time and that was a good decision to give other peoples drama more space to unfold. And thanks to the narrator the actions happening were felt as if real I could feel the waves under the boats myself. Some players could have been more utilised for entertainment purposes but in the end it’s still a crime drama and maybe too much humour is a bit weird. And at least there is frank be keeps the spirit up. I also think that giving the story more volume made it easier to enjoy it if this had been squashed to a reduced story or half finished it’d be a shame so it was fast paced but it did not feel rushed. Bring on the next one and somehow I hope for a bit of new blood put a cat amongst the pigeons again .

That’s like it should be

Really enjoy this series and found this book to be as good as the rest. Was a little disappointed at the ending. It just wasn't quite as gripping as some of the previous ones. The story built up nicely and then seemed to finish really promptly. Other than that, I loved it. Adore the characters; find the narration outstanding and found the storyline really interesting and different. Would still highly recommend.

Superb!

Exceptional as usual. Story draws you straight in, characters are old friends and the same feeling of disappointment that I have finished it. Jonathan Peebles is a wonderful narrator and brings it all to life. I don’t know what I shall do when I finish all these books. LJ Ross please don’t stop writing them!

Loved it

Not sure why I really like this story in the series so much but I think it’s my favourite so far … mysterious and dark and with great pacing a cracking seaside yarn

Best so far
