About this listen

The clock is ticking…

For Detective Chief Inspector Ryan, the stakes have never been higher. Most of the world thinks he’s dead, killed by an assasin's rifle in his own home. But another man took the bullet intended for him, and now Ryan’s living on borrowed time. As long as he stays ‘dead’, in the sanctuary of his parents’ home in Devon, there’s a chance to find the people behind the deadly killing network. It’s only a matter of time before his secret’s uncovered, and nowhere will be safe.

Back in Northumberland, Ryan’s team are called in to investigate the mysterious death of a man in Alnwick, who collapsed yards from the walls of its Mediaeval castle. When a second person is rushed to hospital with the same symptoms, her life hangs in the balance unless they can discover the toxic substance that’s killing her. For DCs Lowerson and Reed, there’s only one place to look for inspiration—the Poison Garden…

Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit, set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

Complicated, deep and humorous. Incredibly well read/performed. Good twists and characterization. Pushing the boundaries of credibility.

I am usually a big fan of the narrator but the Irish lilt of Denise was not the same as in previous books - I found that annoying. The same happened in the previous book where a character from early books, who reappeared, had a totally different voice. Shame.

Excellent follow up to the previous book.

So disappointed to finish this book as it means I have to wait for LJ Ross to finish the next one.

I love that it hasn’t become formulaic as the 22 books progress.

I feel like a child waiting as I’m for next in the series and am hoping I’m not too old to start singing “Why am we waiting?” as I used to on car journeys and school trips in the 1970s.

So until the next book comes out I’ll just have to see what else can catch my attention

Had me hanging on to the end

So far, all of the DCI Ryan series, that I have read, have been excellent.
