About this listen

The clock is ticking…

For Detective Chief Inspector Ryan, the stakes have never been higher. Most of the world thinks he’s dead, killed by an assasin's rifle in his own home. But another man took the bullet intended for him, and now Ryan’s living on borrowed time. As long as he stays ‘dead’, in the sanctuary of his parents’ home in Devon, there’s a chance to find the people behind the deadly killing network. It’s only a matter of time before his secret’s uncovered, and nowhere will be safe.

Back in Northumberland, Ryan’s team are called in to investigate the mysterious death of a man in Alnwick, who collapsed yards from the walls of its Mediaeval castle. When a second person is rushed to hospital with the same symptoms, her life hangs in the balance unless they can discover the toxic substance that’s killing her. For DCs Lowerson and Reed, there’s only one place to look for inspiration—the Poison Garden…

Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit, set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

I am usually a big fan of the narrator but the Irish lilt of Denise was not the same as in previous books - I found that annoying. The same happened in the previous book where a character from early books, who reappeared, had a totally different voice. Shame.

Excellent follow up to the previous book.

Complicated, deep and humorous. Incredibly well read/performed. Good twists and characterization. Pushing the boundaries of credibility.

LJ Ross has done it again, an easy to read, fast paced thriller with humour and characters that you can’t help but love.

The interplay between Phillips and Ryan is always able to make me chuckle. The couple’s in the series demonstrate love and respect within their relationships which is heart warming.

Overall, thoroughly enjoyable. If you are coming across this series for the first time, I urge you to start at book 1 - Holy Island, you will not be disappointed.

Great instalment in the DCI Ryan series

As always, book no 22 in the DCI Ryan series kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Written with LJ Ross's sense of mystery thriller, along with just the right amount of romance and humour thrown in.
More criminals from the seedy Northumberland underworld brought to justice.
I can't wait for the next instalment.

Another brilliant DCI Ryan mystery

So far, all of the DCI Ryan series, that I have read, have been excellent.
