Summary
From the number one international best-selling author of Holy Island and Impostor.
From the shadows into the light....
When a fishing boat is wrecked off the treacherous North Sea coast and the body of a young woman washes up on the beach beside the iconic ‘Marsden Rock’, DCI Ryan cannot ignore the call to duty.
With one already dead and more human cargo missing from the wreckage, Ryan and his team race to find the remaining souls - before it’s too late and their investigation turns to murder. As they uncover the seedy underbelly of Tyneside, cold and calculated opportunism clashes with the rock-hard arm of the Law, but there’s one thing that proves stronger than stone....
The human spirit.
Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit set amidst the spectacular North Eastern landscape.

Another brilliant visit to Ryan and his team!
While impatiently waiting for this to become available on Audible, I read some of the reviews on Amazon, and saw complaints that half of the book was about the interpersonal relationships between all of the main characters, and not enough police procedural.
That is entirely true, but so has every other one of the excellent books in this series! It's one of the traits that make them so thoroughly enjoyable for so many people, me included!
Like many people, I was annoyed that the last two books were split into two, when it clearly should have been one book, and it smacked of the publishers putting profits above all else. Hopefully lessons have been learned from so much criticism of that fact, and it didn't feel as though that had happened again, apart from a nice lead in to a future book.
Wonderful narration as always! I can't contemplate a DCI Ryan book without Jonathan Keeble bringing all of the characters to life. He is a Master of his craft!!

Whilst I have enjoyed this series, I'm not enjoying being taken for a ride, these books are getting shorter and shorter! Admittedly this one was better than the last 2- which were actually 1 book split into 2, but still this is a very short romp!

Disappointing
The narrator was excellent. I feel that more themes could have been developed, and more threads followed. It was too short, without depth. These books are getting 'thinner' as the series progresses. I would have to read very good reviews before trying another in the series. So disappointing as it was a series that I had enjoyed.

Well I used to love these books of which beautiful Northumberland was one of the main stars and Ryan was your fairly archetypal flawed genius but now Northumberland is hardly a backdrop and Ryan is so perfect his halo must give him headaches sometimes and the romance is a bit schmultzy - I am not sure where the author will go next and I will follow out of curiosity and loyalty- but ......

I think I’ve listened to the last LJ Ross
Arghhh!!!
If I ever met a man, cop or brickie as perfect as Ryan “a bronze god” perfect in every woman’s dream I’d have to kill him for the sake of humanity.
This character has gone from a flawed but good cop to a paragon of virtue who could do no wrong. Ok so he punched the DCI but be honest who wouldn’t punch a DCI.
The flowery lovey dovey language going on at home while young trafficked women are being drugged raped and beaten in the parallel main storyline was I found vomit inducing.
Nope that’s it.

Awesome series..
Love, love, love the DC Ryan Mysteries. I've read them all except Cuthbert's Way, that one would never download for me. Not even the people at Audible could help me. So, hopefully I didn't miss another great book because I finally gave up on it.
This one was about human trafficking and, I swear, Lawana was one of the bravest women I've ever read about AND I'm going to assume the last guy who took her will be in the next book, cuz he sure got away in this one.
No sex or swearing at all.
As for the narration: Jonathan Keeble is awesome in this book. You don't even have to be told who's talking, if you've read all the Ryan books, because his voices for all the main characters are always so exact, so perfect.

Another good DCI Ryan story
We waited a long time for this audiobook. It was worth it, as usual.
The subject of human trafficking is troubling and it’s been the subject of several books lately. Our valiant team of murder detectives has a lot to deal with after a woman’s body is found on the beach following the shipwreck of the fishing boat bringing the trafficked women to the UK.
The familiar characters are back and that’s always good.
As usual, Jonathan Keeble does a masterful job with the narration.
