About this listen

Nothing ever happens in August, and tenacious sleuth Kate Shackleton deserves a break. Heading off for a long-overdue holiday to Whitby, she visits her school friend Alma, who works as a fortune-teller there.

Kate had been looking forward to a relaxing seaside sojourn but upon arrival discovers that Alma's daughter, Felicity, has disappeared, leaving her mother a note and the pawn ticket for their only asset: a watch-guard. What makes this more intriguing is the jeweller who advanced Felicity the 30 shillings is Jack Phillips, Alma's current gentleman friend.

Kate can't help but become involved and goes to the jeweller's shop to get some answers. When she makes a horrifying discovery in the back room, it soon becomes clear that her services are needed.

Met by a wall of silence by town officials, keen to maintain Whitby's idyllic façade, it's up to Kate - ably assisted by Jim Sykes and Mrs Sugden - to discover the truth behind Felicity's disappearance. And they say nothing happens in August....

Where does Death at the Seaside rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I just love these 1920's stories about Mrs Shackleton, private detective, and her side kick Mr Sykes, sleuthing in my home county of West Yorkshire. The period comes over so well, the sights and sounds and lives of the people are excellently drawn. However in this book Mrs Shackleton does not seem to be quite her usual self. She comes across as somewhat diffident. I just hope the break at the seaside will perk her up for her next adventure!

What did you like best about this story?

The descriptions of Whitby and the surrounding coast, which I know so well but of course not from the 20's. However from the tales of my parents I think the writer has captured the flavour of those times beautifully

Have you listened to any of Anne Dover’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Ann Dover reads all the books clearly with good demarcation between the characters

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No I would not like to listen to any book at one setting. The joy of Audible is that you can relax and read to just when the mood takes you, but not all in one go.

Any additional comments?

I did enjoy this book, and hope it is not the last we hear from Mrs Shackleton and her devoted helper Mr Sykes

Mrs Shackleton seems a bit tired

I love these books. Evocative of an age peopled by wonderful characters. Beautifully written and read - like being wrapped in a warm blanket. The pace is just right, the stories are full of interest and twists. Can’t wait to purchase the next one.

Evocative, warm and wonderful

I have read several Frances Brody novels. They are good but light mystery murder stories and II particularly like them for the locations as I spent time in Yorkshire as a child.

A mystery murder in a gentle seaside location.

This was a fascinating insight into life in the late 1920s. I love the way the writer describes the most humble of homes in detail. The characters are so well defined and the reader is clear and good to listen to.

An intriguing story
