Summary

It begins with a letter... The letter contains a request - think of a number, any number - and a sealed envelope. Inside the envelope is that number... When Dave Gurney, retired NYPD homicide detective, is contacted by an old college acquaintance about some startling letters he’s been receiving, it is at first little more than a diverting but sinister puzzle. Until the acquaintance is brutally killed.

Suddenly Gurney finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation that makes no sense. The killer seems to have known his victim intimately. How else was he able to predict his victim’s thoughts, even his actions? How did he know his darkest secrets? The killer is smart and he is playing with the police...

hangs together very well

My listening takes place while I take walks in the countryside, which sometimes last for two or three hours. I get bored if I don't have something to listen to. I want stories that are as long as possible so as not to have to choose a new one too quickly. This one suits perfectly.

This story has plenty of intrigue. It is easy to follow and to remember if taken up three or four days after the previous listening. It has good rhythm with a mystery one is curious to hear explained, and which is not too violent for those who don't like that (there is a bit of blood of course). Interesting characters but not too many so there's no getting lost wondering who is who. The explanation at the end is not over-the-top and remains within the realm of what's possible.

A gripping tale

Took a chance on this book but was impressed by other reviews. It turned out to be an excellent choice. The plot-line is imaginative and compelling, and the narrator excellent. Delighted to see that book 2 has been released on Audible this month.

I actually laughed out loud

Considering the book is about a retired detective tracking a gruesome serial killer - I found myself crying out with laughter!!
John Verdon's characters and Jeff Harding's reading truly kept me thoroughly engaged. I love anything Jeff reads but this is a double act I can't wait to see again.
Well done all

Fantastic new find

This was a really enjoyable listen - as always Jeff Harding is a fantastic narrator, and unlike the last book I heard him narrate where there were echoes of Reacher, this time I thought he brought some different characterisations.
The storyline was a really intelligent thriller - even though I guessed how some of the tricks were done, I was not 100% sure of the baddie, so enjoyed the reveal. As noted in other reviews, Gurney isn't always the most sympathetic character, but he feels very human. I have already bought the next book in the series, so that tells you how much I enjoyed this.

A Very Enjoyable Listen

This book introduces the interesting contemporary American detective, Dave Gurney, who is retired from the LAPD but who cannot (because he does not really want to) leave police work behind. The story and the characterization are intriguing because Dave Gurney is not just a clever detective but also a man who is not entirely honest with himself. His relationship with his insightful and clever wife is particularly engrossing. There are a number of characters in the story who you love to hate, because they make such believable cantankerous human beings. The story is richly narrated by Jeff Harding, whose pace and story-creating ability is thoroughly engaging.

A marriage made in heaven

Jeff Harding’s reading, and John Verdon’s perfectly paced writing are the perfect complement to one another. This is a great story - ingenious - ingenious enough to make one feel clever whilst listening and trying to work it out, oneself - but also credible. Dave Gurney is a lovely creation; a man to be enjoyed by male and female alike. The plot is a Chinese box. The police characters are all interesting, some unusual, all beautifully drawn. The marriage at the centre of the story comforting and enviable, while also being believable. And then there is Jeff Harding’s reliable, beautifully judged reading. The characters into whom he breathes life, the story perfectly played, like a piano concerto. It’s great stuff. I listened when I oughtn’t - isn’t that the highest accolade one can give? Thank you, Jeff, John, and Audible. I can’t wait to listen to the next one!!
