Summary

After an attempted assassination and kidnapping, Sophos, heir to the throne of Sounis, disappears. Those who care for him - including the thief Eugenides and the queen of Eddis - are left to wonder if he is alive and if they will ever see him again.

Sophos, under the guidance of yet another tutor, practices his swordplay and strategises escape scenarios should his father's villa come under attack. How would he save his mother? His sisters? Himself? Could he reach the horses in time? Where would he go? But nothing prepares him for the day armed men, silent as thieves, swarm the villa courtyard ready to kill, to capture, to kidnap. Sophos, the heir to the throne of Sounis, disappears without a trace.

In Attolia, Eugenides, the new and unlikely king, has never stopped wondering what happened to Sophos. Nor has the queen of Eddis. They send spies. They pay informants. They appeal to the gods. But as time goes by, it becomes less and less certain that they will ever see their friend alive again.

Across the small peninsula battles are fought, bribes are offered, and conspiracies are set in motion. Darkening the horizon, the Mede Empire threatens, always, from across the sea. And Sophos, anonymous and alone, bides his time. Sophos, drawing on his memories of Gen, Pol, the Magus and Eddis, sets out on an adventure that will change all of their lives forever.

Can the same surprise happen in book 4?

I was so expecting it to be very hard to source a new surprise for the arc of Gen’s story. Surprise! The story is not really about him. This is a two edged sword as I felt let down, but also it gave scope for new twists and more growth. The key thing that I love about these books is that they draw you in. You just want to stay in the world and see and experience the growth of the characters. The character arcs are all extremely well done, they hold growth surprise, warmth and believability.
The references to Greek history and myth style telling is so well done – not a clone, but a twist on Greek Myth. Having a small myth and a small touch of gods and magic is another example of how cleverly written these books are. In such a light touch, that this time, I did not even realise when the magic happened until afterwards.
So over all not a 5/5 when all the previous books were, but still a wonderous book you much read.

Excellently read story

I’ve loved all of these books - they surprise and delight by turns. Even though by this one I had come to expect the twists I still didn’t quite see them all coming. The audio was an excellent format - the narration is fantastic! My only complaint is that the next two aren’t out for such a long time.
