Story
When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he's not alone. He's surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade - a walled encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible stone maze. Like Thomas, the Gladers don't know why or how they came to be there - or what's happened to the world outside. All they know is that every morning when the walls slide back, they will risk everything - even the Grievers, half-machine, half-animal horror that patrol its corridors, to try and find out.

In a world struggling back from the brink of apocalypse, life is harsh. But for Elspeth Gordie, born with enhanced mental abilities that would see her sterilised or burned if discovered, it is also dangerous. There is only survival by secrecy, and so she determines never to use her forbidden powers. But it is as if they have their own imperative, and their use inevitably brings her to the attention of the totalitarian Council that rules the Land....

Obernewtyn Chronicles
I have read and listened to this series repeatedly, first when I was in high school, again when I started my first job and had the privilege of meeting the truly wonderful author, and then every subsequent wintery holiday when I felt like cosying up with a great series that would take me away from everyday life.
In a post-apocalyptic world under totalitarian rule orphan Elspeth and the other misfits – children born with unusual mental abilities – are sentenced to exile in remote Council farms for treatment. With her freedom destroyed and suffering from the loss of her parents Elspeth must hide her powers to survive. Dealing with themes of prejudice, discrimination and cruelty but also resilience of the human spirit I can’t help myself to keep coming back to this series. Even though the release of each subsequent book in the Obernewtyn Chronicles took many years of anxious nail biting , I can’t help but feel it was worth the wait!

Ged, the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea, was called Sparrowhawk in his reckless youth. Hungry for power and knowledge, Sparrowhawk tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to restore the balance.

The Earthsea Series
The Earthsea Series feels a little exciting as it is under the radar and people don’t seem to realise how brilliant it is.
Like a cross between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings but set on islands or an archipelago with multicultural fantasy characters and loads of incredible dragons, there is nothing I disliked about this series. We see the main character Ged and others coming of age and understanding the adult world throughout the series. I am not a huge fantasy fan but this really captured my imagination.
The Narrator is at first quite highbrow but after a few minutes of listening I fell in love with his unique emphasis and storytelling style. Many fantasy writers love this series and grant it with huge influence over their writing.

The Hazel Wood
Have you ever thought about how truly dark fairy tales can be? We're told the watered-down versions when we're young, but even those feature child-eating witches, bloodthirsty giants, murderous stepmothers, and more death traps as allegory.
In The Hazel Wood, 17-year-old Alice and her mother attempt to outrun the uncanny bad luck that follows them wherever they go. Soon, Alice discovers that the fairy-tale world described in her grandmother's cult-classic stories is real — and it's closing in. Melissa Albert's debut captures the grim, no-takebacks nature of fairy tales — how terrifying, how life-threatening, and how unyielding they can be on their path to parable.
