Join the journey of Turgenevs enigmatic hero, Tchulkaturin, who embodies the quintessential Russian archetype, the superfluous man. This character is no prince, but a man of comfort living a monotonous life, aimlessly led by circumstances that threaten to consume him. This novella is structured as a diary, which Tchulkaturin begins writing after a terminal illness diagnosis. His entries, spanning a mere two weeks, encapsulate the countdown to his inevitable end. In these pages, Tchulkaturin rehashes the one meaningful event of his life - a one-sided love affair leading to a non-fatal duel that...

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. The Russian Literary Tradition has justly earned a magnificent reputation. The Russian Empire of the Czars was a huge and disparate patchwork of peoples ruled by an overbearing elite that employed a middle-class bureaucracy to keep the working class firmly underfoot. Within its vaulted ranks are a role call of many of the greatest literary talents of the ages.

Story0
In Fathers and Sons, Ivan Turgenev masterfully explores the widening chasm between generations in 19th-century Russia through the lens of his iconic characters. The novel introduces Yevgeny Bazarov, often hailed as the first Bolshevik, whose nihilistic stance and rejection of traditional values symbolize the clash between the old order and the emerging nihilist movement. Written in response to the cultural divide between the liberals of the 1830s/1840s and their radical successors, Turgenevs work also juxtaposes these progressive ideologies with the conservative Slavophiles, who championed ...

House of Gentlefolk, originally titled Дворянское Гнездо (Dvoryanskoye Gnezdo), is often regarded as a sequel to Turgenevs Rudin. This poignant novel follows the life of Fyodor Ivanych Lavretsky, the son of a nobleman and a serf, who is raised in the confines of his familys country estate by a stern maiden aunt, often thought to be inspired by Turgenevs own mother, known for her harshness. Join us as we delve into this exploration of class, family, and personal struggle set against the backdrop of 19th-century Russia. - Summary by tovarisch based on Wikipedia article

Russian literature exudes an atmosphere of mysticism, which is said to be a natural result of the simplicity of her people. Often, instead of being "about" anything, Russian stories sometimes seem to be the "thing" in itself. Be this as it may, it is an undeniable fact that with hardly any portent of future greatness to come, Russian literature suddenly sprang fully developed into existence in the 19th century.

Story0
Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, poet, playwright, and popularizer of Russian literature in the West. Fathers and Sons (1862), one of the most acclaimed Russian novels of the 19th century, deals with the growing cultural divide between two generations or mindsets of Russians. Both the nihilists (the "sons") and the 1830s liberals (the "fathers") sought Western-style social change. "Mumu" (1854) is the story of Gerasim, a deaf-mute serf whose life of poverty is thrown into stark relief by his rescue of the dog Mumu.

Set in Baden-Baden, Smoke is Ivan Turgenev's most cosmopolitan novel. First published in 1867, it is an exquisite study of politics and society and an enduringly poignant love story. Smoke, with its European setting, barbed wit, and visionary call for Russia to look west, became the center of a famous philosophical breach between Turgenev and Dostoevsky.

The title of the novella is almost an adequate summary in itself. The "boy-meets-girl-then-loses-her" story is universal but not, I think, banal - despite a surprise ending which notoriously turns out to be very little of a surprise. First Love is given its originality and poignancy by Turgenev's mastery of the piercing turning-point (akin to Joyce's "epiphanies") that transforms the character's whole being, making a tragic outcome inevitable. Even the nature symbolism is rescued from triteness by lovely poetic similes - e.g. "but at that point my attention was arrested by the appearance of a ...
