About this listen

This is the second book in the Virus series, which parallels the SIMPOC series.

A suspicious virus has killed 99.99997 percent of the people. A ruthless warlord who moved into the White House attacked the government at Camp David. The president moved the remaining government to an aircraft carrier in the Atlantic and left a military unit to deal with the warlord.

The decimated US Navy is still functional. They must defend themselves from the remnants of militaries with a grudge against the US that use the opportunity to get revenge.

Joan Herl and her remaining space station Oasis crew returned to Earth, and a computer playing by different rules attacked them. Their only ally was the first thinking computer SIMPOC and his surrogate Alpha. Dr. Julius, who was one of the moon colony crew members, steals the research for thinking computers, and with his expertise he creates another computer that rivals SIMPOC and who starts making its own plans.

Eventually, they all find out why the virus started and who is responsible.

The unnamed narrator's performance is a masterclass in subtlety, using weary inflections and measured pacing to make the AI's existential crisis feel profoundly human. We don't just hear the clinical data; we feel the weight of its impossible choices. The sound design is minimalist, forcing you to sit in the unsettling silence of a depopulated world. It’s a story that lingers, not with the shock of outbreak, but with the haunting, philosophical aftermath of survival.

This book elevates the well-worn zombie apocalypse by introducing a compelling sci-fi enemy. The revelation that the virus is a terraforming tool for alien invaders is a brilliant narrative pivot. It transforms a story of survival into one of global resistance against an existential, extraterrestrial threat. The concept forces characters to fight not just the infected, but the very planet that is being reshaped against them. This fresh premise delivers both chilling body horror and a thrilling, high-stakes battle for humanity's future, making it a standout in the genre.

This book is more than a simple virus outbreak story. It masterfully explores the fragility of human civilization when faced with an existential threat. The narrative doesn't just focus on the chaos, but delves into the profound psychological and moral dilemmas faced by survivors. It's a stark reminder of our interconnectedness and the resilience of the human spirit when pushed to the brink. The characters are compelling, their struggles feel authentic, and the ending offers a poignant, if uncertain, glimmer of hope for a species learning to rebuild from ashes.
