Summary

Young girls are disappearing around the country, and there is nothing to connect them to one another. Dr Tony Hill sets his team an exercise: they are given the details and asked to discover links between the cases. Only one officer comes up with a theory that is ridiculed...until one of their own is murdered.

For Tony Hill the murder becomes a matter for personal revenge, and, joined by colleague Carol Jordan, he embarks on a game where hunter and hunted can all too easily be reversed.

Accents aren't great but...

I actually really enjoyed this book but the narration wasn't brilliant. Took a while to get into but I'm glad I stuck with it! Really good story if you can get past the narration. I've listened to other book read by the same narrator so was more used to listening go his voice. I do think if this is your first listen you might struggle a little

Good Book, Narration Awful.

Judging by the amount of positive mentions that this narrator gets he must have a lot of friends prepared to write him a positive review and post it on here. There is no excuse for some of the very poor accents, they're terrible, I'm staggered that no one saw fit to tell him to just read it straight, we can work the rest out. I genuinely feel some of the characters, especially the females lose a lot of their gravitas and on occasion the actual substance of what they're saying by being portrayed so poorly.
A high ranking female Police officer disciplining her staff in a voice more akin to that of Wendy Craig's "Listen With Mother" left a lot to be desired. Saul Reichlin is clearly a professional as his standard reading voice very much fits the bill, more of that standard would have been welcomed. The book weaves a few trails here and there and held my interest in the characters, despite Saul's best attempts to make me loath them, I'm tempted by the follow up but will need to steady myself for another "performance" from our narrator.

Does what it says it does on the jacket.

Val McDermid, serial killer, Tony Hill/Carole Jordan.
Intelligent writing with good plot development and well drawn characters. Unobtrusive and interesting reading by Saul Reichlin.
This is actually the first of the evil Jago
serial killer books and to be honest I am somewhat jaded with serial killers and prefer more diffuse plots. But this is Dr Hill and that is what he does, investigate them that is.

Good listen

I enjoyed the story, as I have all Val McDermid's books, however there were some aspects of this that didn't sit well. The sheer bloody mindedness and stupidity of the police officers leading the official investigation would, I'm sure, be quite offensive to real officers and this lent an element of the unbelievable to the story. The narrator did not help, as the accents were poor and the intonation of some passages didn't match the tension level. It sometimes came over as a bit patronising. That said, it's still a good story and well worth a listen as none of these spoils it completely.

Amazing series

I love Val McDermid, especially the Tony Hill / Carol Jordan series.
Many of the reviews I’ve seen complain about the narrator, he is a ropey in the first book but gets better - and you’ll be so engrossed in the story you won’t care.

Great characters and an entertaining story

An enjoyable listen. Although there is quite a cast of characters, I never found them confusing. They are always unique and well drawn. The storyline has varied pace, is sometimes interrupted or diverted, but is easy to follow even when I come back to the plot after a few days.
My only criticism is the narrator's rendition of female characters, for whom he always gives a softness which I find often unwarranted and sometimes feels slightly creepy.

Very slow to get to Vance

For supposedly expert profilers it takes an age for Vance to come into the frame. Still a good listen though.
