Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Hank is a thug. He knows he's a thug. He has no problem with that realization. In his view the galaxy has given him a gift: a mutation that allows him to withstand great deals of physical trauma. He puts his abilities to the best use possible and that isn't by being a scientist. Besides, the space station Belvaille doesn't need scientists. It is not, generally, a thinking person's locale. It is the remotest habitation in the entire Colmarian Confederation. There is literally no reason to be there.

When a spaceship landed in an open field in the quiet mill town of Sorrow Falls, Massachusetts, everyone realized humankind was not alone in the universe. With that realization everyone freaked out for a little while. Or almost everyone. The residents of Sorrow Falls took the news pretty well. This could have been due to a certain local quality of unflappability, or it could have been that in three years the ship did exactly nothing other than sit quietly in that field, and nobody understood the full extent of this nothing the ship was doing better than the people who lived right next door.

Stumbled across this 'plying' beauty

Summary
An Irishman in space. Hoards of alien technological treasures to be discovered. What could go wrong?
Don't answer that....
Fletcher Connolly hasn't got a lot to lose. Since he and half the galaxy signed on to the rat race of the technological relics trade, Fletch has come to terms with the idea that he will join the ranks of unlucky explorers that perish light years from home without a dime to his name.
But bankruptcy is a great motivator. With friends and family counting on him to strike it rich, Fletch embarks on an unwilling quest for alien treasure. His decrepit exploration ship, the Skint Idjit, and her successor, the Intergalactic Bogtrotter, plunge disastrously through the wildest regions of the Interstellar Railroad...from an uninhabited planet appropriately named Suckass...to a deliberately misnamed mafia-run planet known as Arcadia...to a rogue planet inhabited by aliens resembling cuddly teddy bears...to a moon covered with giant cacti...and, ultimately, to the supermassive black hole in the center of the galaxy, where Fletch's terrible judgment comes back to bite him in the rear for the last time.
Epic catastrophes and belly laughs pile up breathlessly in this delightful comic sci-fi adventure, a worthy successor to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
This complete edition of The Reluctant Adventures of Fletcher Connolly on the Interstellar Railroad contains all four episodes of Fletch's unlucky career:
- Skint Idjit
- Intergalactic Bogtrotter
- Banjaxed Ceili
- Supermassive Blackguard
Felix R. Savage is the NYT, WSJ, and USAT best-selling author of the Earth's Last Gambit Quartet and many other books. This is by far the funniest one.

I wanted to love this book, but I did like it
Seemed like this book was comprised of a podcast or radio series - more so than as an actual single novel. The characters were fun; adventures a hoot, but the book came up a little empty. Like professional wrestling, there was an unfulfilled repetitiveness in the hi-jinks and capers throughout the book. This is a fun read, but won't really challenge you - a good ride with no real destination in mind.

good non crappy mid range story.
I wasn't sure about it, but it got right into a solid SF story.
its not a sweeping space opera, its not too silly or ironic.
its a mid range solid adventure with likable characters and some fun sf.
I would say this is a breakfast at Denny's. Not hang over breakfast. Not job interview breakfast.
it's kind of breakfast with your dad before splitting a lot of wood.

So much fun!
I'm calling this narrator "Nick O'Podehl" from now on. He's always fantastic but this performance of a really witty and fun book is brilliant. So much to love - CBs on the LP, Fletch's American accent brought out to save his skin, wicked corporate overlords, fancy dress parties, tree cats. Really glad I spent this credit.

Super awesome!!!!
I'd already read the first two books in this series, and liked them. The humor is fun, and the characters are memorable. I'm already a fan of this author's Elfrida Goto series, or whatever he's calling it now that it's past book 3. This series appealed to me in the same way. There's humor, grand adventures, and ALIENS! I absolutely loved these. I would recommend to anyone who likes the original Star Wars trilogy, and wished there was a little more humor (NOT Space Balls level, just a little more than Lucas felt necessary), or just wished their sci-fi was a bit more tongue-in-cheek. The voice actor sounds familiar, and I will definitely be looking for more from him, as well.

This book was great. I listened to it all in one go without stopping, chuckling to myself the whole way. I really hope that there are more stories of the Connolly family, especially Fletcher.

to be honest I bought this for the voice acting
the story is laugh out loud funny frequently. it's hard to decide if it's the story or the superb voice acting of Nick Podehl. if, like me you are a student of sarcasm and other forms of wry humor you may also enjoy this. it does become a bit predictable and the ending is pure romance but I think I'd listen more that once.

Funny, light hearted take on sci-fi
I'm immensely surprised by how much I loved the Audible version of this series. It's sort of sci-fi lite if you will and that's fine. It's light hearted and silly and fun in all the right ways. There are ridiculous alien creatures - butterflyzilla - and sinister multi planet corporatezillas with familiar names still up to the same antics and little guys dodging around by the seat of their pants trying to make a buck and outrun the bill collectors. It's funny and full of wise cracks and some interesting new ideas about alien life before us out there. The narrator does a good job and his voices for different characters are clear and easy to distinguish
