About this listen

The chartered Zarathustra Company had it all their way. Their charter was for a Class III uninhabited planet, which Zarathustra was, and it meant they owned the planet lock stock and barrel. They exploited it, developed it and reaped the huge profits from it without interference from the Colonial Government. Then Jack Holloway, a sunstone prospector, appeared on the scene with his family of Fuzzies and the passionate conviction that they were not cute animals but little people.©1980 H. Editor reviews

This novel is a nostalgic classic from the 1960s. The extra-terrestrial environment in which it occurs is, like the Earth itself, a place that is colonized and exploited. Jack Holloway enters planet Zarathustra with his wards the Fuzzies, trying to secure them a home. The Fuzzies are a good metaphor for all the displaced people and animals on Earth. This vintage novel has depth; it raises questions of how sentience can be measured, and what it means to have a place in the world. Narrator Peter Ganim faithfully recites the groovy sci-fic verbiage of the book, but his sincere delivery make the listener bypass the quaint wonkiness and focus on the still-relevant questions found here. A good listen for those interested in early works of sci-fi.

a good feel good story but a little dated, with a lack of depth to the single female character.
suitable for children

A basic but fun little story which was clearly the inspiration for the Ewoks and later Avatar. It suffers from repetition and getting a bit bogged down in procedure, particularly towards the end, but it's still good. I just would have preferred a bit more Fuzzy!! Looking forward to reading more in the series from the ill-fated author himself and others such as the great John Scalzi.

A Fun Little Story

It has cute aliens, a nefarious corporation, courtroom drama and an underdog trying to do the right thing. I love it.

has everything for a great movie

This was written in 1962. The science is so off it makes me smile.
This single book has spawned a massive amount of fan fiction. It is a pleasure to read something that moves away from the laser gun / spaceship end of Sci Fi and into the 'humanities endeavors to grow off world.'

Why is this not a movie?
