About this listen

Mark Randall lay dead in a field near Lowacre long before Smith had done what he had to do in Belfast. By the time he went back to work, the investigation was well underway. "It's not my case," he says more than once, and he really doesn't need it to be; he has enough to think about as it is. But going around the Norfolk countryside dotting the i's and crossing the t's, speaking to the local farmers and the Brothers of St. Francis from Abbeyfields, Smith begins to suspect that the investigation might be heading in entirely the wrong direction. Arrests are made, charges are brought, and Christopher Waters asks Smith if he has ever seen the wrong man convicted in a murder case. The answer is yes, and the next question is, what can be done to prevent it from happening again?

Great plot…characters are excellent and DC Smith a firm favourite! Hope there are more to come!

Another great read!

I felt the plot on this one was a bit more obvious but liked the fact that Smith was not the lead on the case. Ongoing great development of character and back story which makes me want to read on.

Another great DC Smith take

DC Smith!! he's the sort of policeman you hope and pray will be in charge, if ever you are involved in a crime, particularly a murder. But then again, would you want your fathef, for that is what you'd like him to be, mixed up in criminal subterfuge and skulduggery!? Lots of both in yet another brilliant episode of an excellent series. Don't be put off by the narrative voice at the beginning! It's definitely just as I would like to believe DC's voice, exactly sounds like!!!

another brilliant performance/story

I started the story arc with the development of Waters' character, and it took me a while to get used to the dry reading, but thoroughly bought into the characterisation by the end of the first book. I then decided to go back to the beginning, and the style of narration so fits the lead character, I was doubly hooked. Nothing in life is clear cut or always works out, and none of us are perfect, including our heroes. Peter Grainger shows great understanding of our fallibility and pulls sympathy from the reader for many of the fallen, innocent or not. I have really enjoyed all his books I've read so far.

humanity of the characters

I found this author by chance. I have read/listened to all of the Kingslake books and I’m now working my way through the Smiths although I did start on a Smith.

I really like the narrator. He reminds me of the late Robert Robinson. I only have one complaint with him and that is that the car is not pronounced Poogeot. Really annoying.

The plots are good. I like the characters. There is also humour.

Excellent in all respects
