Pivot the Professional Development for Teachers

I enjoyed this narration, and the well-written information was thought-provoking. This audiobook opens up an interesting discussion concerning educating a neurodivergent child. Specific learning disabilities are challenging to identify sometimes and can go unreported for years. As parents, we don’t want to hear the words connected to a disability. We must know that a disability like cancer does not mean we can’t eliminate the condition. Sometimes medication or procedures are necessary to eliminate life-threatening conditions. The same is true inside the classroom and at home. This book provided a learning journey to understand better how to help these students in my classroom.

Autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, includes what used to be called Autistic Disorder, Asperger syndrome, or Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified, all of which affect a person’s social and emotional skills and nonverbal communication. ASD has many similarities to ADHD, but there are also differences between the two.

ADHD and ASD are neurodevelopmental disorders (brain development has been affected in some way). That means both conditions/disorders affect the central nervous system, which is responsible for movement, language, memory, and social and focusing skills. Several scientific studies have shown that the two conditions often coexist, but researchers have not yet figured out why they do. Classroom activities that support a community classroom design and strategies for teaching students can help make learning accessible to all students. In 20 years of teaching, not enough professional development has been given to the general education teacher to help support students with ASD or ADHD and other brain development disorders. I found the information about the three types of self-control: impulse, emotional, and movement control to be the most helpful.

Great book

I like the thought provoking approach of this book. A girl on my team has just been diagnosed with adhd so this book has been super helpful. It has opened my mind and given me a great perspective on the feelings and actions of someone with adhd or somewhere else on the neurodivergent scale. The author includes studies and other scientific research. I have definitely learnt a lot

An empathetic approach

I love how the author adopted a more personal, empathetic approach to the information in the book, instead of just highlighting the facts. This gave the read a more nuanced approach, and it became easier to understand the need for more empathy, understanding, and individualized approach, which the author calls for.

This book highlights the unique strengths of ADHD, which is rarely the case in most online materials. This is a wonderfully humanistic approach, and it made the read so much better.

Understanding ND vs NT and Symptoms

I have two autistic nephews, and this book gave me incredible insight into how they feel and why they react the way they do. It helped me understand their primary communication issues, the way their brains function, and why they react in so many situations. The clarity and relief I gained from this book was astounding. They have always had food issues and now I understand why. Noise issues are a constant problem and again now I understand why this causes them to feel uncomfortable and stem. Knowing why gave me a true sigh of relief. For anyone working with autistic people, I highly recommend this book.

Language and perspective matters

I just finished listening to "The Pivot for Parents and Educators Looking at Autism and ADHD Through a Different Lens" and I must say, it was a fantastic experience. The book is extremely well-researched and written in a way that only an expert in the field could.

One thing that really stood out to me was Kim Gallo's focus on using the right language. As a parent, I know firsthand how important it is to use inclusive language when describing my child's behavior. It can have a huge impact on the way that a child perceives themselves, and I agree that it is super important to use the right inclusive language to help a neurodivergent child live a much happier life.

The perspective that Gallo brings to the table is really refreshing. I wish more people would read this book to have a better understanding of neurodivergent children. It's clear that Gallo has a deep understanding of the subject matter and is able to express it in a way that is easy to understand.

Finally, I have to give a shoutout to the narrator. They did a fantastic job of performing this audiobook, and it was a pleasure to listen to. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a new perspective on raising children with autism and ADHD. 5 stars all around!

A look at autism and ADHD minds

This book hits home for me with an autistic daughter and another daughter with ADHD. The author discusses her own journey working as a tutor to autistic children while having a daughter with ADHD, and what she went through. She explains that these children have neurodiverse minds and what that means, and how that is different from most children who have neurotypical minds. It isn’t that one is right and the other wrong, but rather that they are different; thus, they behave and learn differently. There is a huge need for people to understand this difference, and society needs to be more inclusive of neurodiverse people and accepting of their differences. The book goes into great detail about what autism is and how to understand these differences. I wish I had this book when my daughters were young, it would have been so helpful, but luckily there is still the opportunity for me to make a difference in their lives. I definitely recommend this book to those wishing to know how to understand neurodiverse minds better.

Need to read if navigating these diagnoses

This author is taking a different approach to explaining what being neurodivergent looks like. Different types of diagnoses make you neurodivergent, but I like that the author put Autism and ADHD together as more kids are diagnosed. The author does a great job of laying out the book in a way that is very organized and helps walk you through what the diagnoses mean, what types of challenges do they come with, and then how to address them. The author dives into sensory issues, emotional regulation, and socialization issues.

There are so many topics with ADHD and autism that people do not understand. It can be from touch, smell, sound, and sensory issues. Learning to be aware of these and how to address them is key to building a good relationship with your child and ensuring they can progress appropriately even with the diagnosis. Being diagnosed does not mean you can do nothing to help your child. You are the one person that can help your child. Others may not understand, and that is okay, but learning how to understand and communicate is key to their success.

I appreciate the time this author put into the book to dive into the issues not typically discussed in detail in other books. I have been researching ADHD for 15 years so I can truly appreciate the work the author has put in to this book.

Insightful

I was completely unaware that there are actually eight senses until I came across the book titled "The Pivot for Parents and Educators Looking at Autism and ADHD Through a Different Lens: How Understanding the Neurodivergent Mind Can Change Our Thoughts and Feelings about a Diagnosis." This book has provided me with profound insights and has truly opened my eyes. While I don't personally have children with ADHD or autism, a dear friend of mine does. She has often shared with me the immense difficulties she faces in her life due to her son's condition. Her struggles include maintaining relationships, as men tend to leave her shortly after becoming involved. Reading this book has taught me a great deal about ADHD and autism. The author has done an exceptional job of conveying her personal journey, from the moment she discovered her child's ADHD diagnosis to how she felt and coped with it. This experience ultimately led her to write this book, with the intention of helping others who may be going through similar challenges.
