About this listen

There's something going bump on the Metropolitan line, and Sergeant Jaget Kumar knows exactly whom to call.

It's PC Peter Grant's specialty....

Only it's more than going 'bump'. Traumatised travellers have been reporting strange encounters on their morning commute, with strangely dressed people trying to deliver an urgent message. Stranger still, despite calling the police themselves, within a few minutes the commuters have already forgotten the encounter - making the follow-up interviews rather difficult.

So with a little help from Abigail and Toby the ghost hunting dog, Peter and Jaget are heading out on a ghost hunting expedition.

Because finding the ghosts and deciphering their urgent message might just be a matter of life and death.

Read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

Critic reviews

"The Hanging Tree is definitely one of the best in the Grant/Aaronovitch pantheon. There again, so have most of the previous books in the series and the odds are the next one probably will be too." (The Bookbag)

"Aaronovitch deftly balances urban fantasy with the police procedural. As for Grant, he's a wonderful blend of laconic copper and, methodically researching how magic works, full-on nerd." (Crime Scene)

"This series is brilliant!" (Teen Librarian)

Left wondering why this story wasn't incorporated into a full length novel. Good story more akin to the early books, with touches of Neverwhere. But some unresolved plot holes and the asides to American listeners /readers niggled. Teen character may please younger audience but overall not sure this was worth a credit.

Much better but

Ben Aaronovitch and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith are my dream team audio book pairing. Engaging stories full of the believable and unbelievable, narrated with clarity, precision, humour and an uncanny ability to move between character voices.

Great story, superb narration

The usual set up of the likeable PC Peter Grant, the urbane DCI Nightingale and weird Molly. Pleasantly supernatural. I very much enjoyed it. Narrator excellent. Veers from English RP to West African seamlessly. Likeable voice for a likeable character.

The combination of Ben's storytelling and Kobna's narration is a match made in heaven. Listening is such a joyous experience that I had planned to save this novella till Christmas. But instant gratification took over...
The PC Peter Grant universe lends itself well to the novella format - I hope there is more.

Unfortunately there is one detraction. The translation of English cultural specific terms into American English - for Reynolds (CIA agent) . It's annoying and disrupts the flow. Despite Kobna's seamless rendition - it jarrs me out of my suspension of disbelief every time.

A treat

Far too short, and the final was wrapped up rather too neatly.

Obviously got board writing about the faceless man, time to start a new plot line.

Still great writing, but the words, "holding " and "pattern" must I'm afraid, be used here.

Too short.

Polished book and expert narration, very much hoping for a full length novel next time.

Excellent as usual

A good story - filling in the part of Peters cousin Abigail, which has been missing from the main story books. However, I’m really looking forward to book seven.

Excellent writing and narration as usual

I love this series and it is brilliantly read by Kobna Holbrook-Smith. This shirt novella doesn’t disappoint and is full of the usual humour, intrigue and fun that I have come to expect from Ben Aaronovitch. PC Peter Grant sets out to investigate strange attacks on end tube with his friend Jaget in tow and all the others from The Folly. This would be hard as a stand-alone as the references to the River Gods wouldn’t make much sense without prior knowledge. However I fully recommend all the previous books to help with this! Top Notch stuff.

Another great offering
