Summary

Now an original series starring Rosamund Pike as Moiraine!

The first novel in Robert Jordan's #1 New York Times best-selling epic fantasy series, The Wheel of Time®.

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

Moiraine Damodred arrives in Emond’s Field on a quest to find the one prophesized to stand against The Dark One, a malicious entity sowing the seeds of chaos and destruction. When a vicious band of half-men, half beasts invade the village seeking their master’s enemy, Moiraine persuades Rand al’Thor and his friends to leave their home and enter a larger unimaginable world filled with dangers waiting in the shadows and in the light.

My preferred version! Yay Rosamund!

I loved this. I much prefer an English reader to an American and this is just perfect.

finally a good narrator

ive been looking at getting into this series (and the Brian Sanderson books) for years but have never been able to get through a single chapter of Michael Kramers robotic voice.

Rosamund Pikes narration is a joy to listen to

Favourite Audiobook of All Time.

This is the first audiobook I have listened to with Rosamund Pike as the narrator and it will not be the last. She is a talented narrator. I have listened to many audiobooks with many narrators and none compare to Rosamund Pike. From the prologue, I was hooked. She truly brought this audiobook to life with her talent for narration, voices and accents. Absolutely incredible.

I would happily listen to the entire Wheel of Time series narrated by Rosamund Pike.

a fantastic new reading of a classic

it feels like I'm reading the wheel of time for the first time again! Rosamund Pike brings wonderful characterisation throughout, great accents , singing and more.

It's not a comparable performance with Kate Reading and Michael Kramer, which I have listened to for hundreds of hours; they're both brilliant ❤️

A great listen

I like Michael Kramer, but Rosamund Pike’s narration is much better. A superb listen with an all encompassing story line.

The Wheel Weaved Rosamund Pike Into the Tapestry

Rosamund Pike has nailed this. I loved these books and these days favour audiobooks for re-reads so was overjoyed when I saw that Rosamund Pike would be reading this as I greatly admire her work and could listen to her performances until the wheel stops turning.

The books themselves are a fantastic yarn written by a man who clearly loved the genre (and latterly seamlessly finished by Brandon Sanderson). They are not without flaws and the greatest for me are the childishness of the characters early on and the immature gender politics (which results in increasing amounts of braid tugging by Nynaeve in later books, and dress smoothing and perhaps some sighs of "boys!" but I may have made the latter up. There is also a fair amount of labouring the point just in case you didn't pick up on things like Aes Sedai being mistrusted ("witches!"). However looking beyond that the World is fantastic and the story is as exciting as it is vast. It truly is an adventure and its faults aside well-written and a classic.

I am not a young man and read little fantasy at this stage in life, but the Wheel of Time is up there with Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, A Song of Ice and Fire, and greater than Magician and The Name of the Wind all of which I think are worthy indulgences for those of mature years.

The books have the advantage that unlike the TV series they are not messing with Lore to make them more relevant and more gender neutral, for example the Dragon Reborn and False Dragons are men in the books and Women have other prominent and essential parts to play in the story. That said, the TV series is right to give a good edit to the story (and has little choice given it's size) and Rosamund Pike makes it a pleasure.

So to conclude, Rosamund Pike brings Robert Jordan's masterpiece to life and I am eager to buy the whole series (including the prequel please) if she has enough breath and motivation to continue to do the series the credit that it deserves.

I wish she’d stop screaming

A reasonable story that lacks weight when the tension rises. It could have been very good but there wasn’t enough emphasis or development in the key sections of the story. The narrator could also be acceptable if she didn’t try so hard to create male voices but the thing that really killed the whole book for me was her shouting. At times I had to turn it down as I thought the neighbours would call the police. She’d suddenly go from whispering to shouting so it actually hurt the ears. I will be avoiding all her work in the future.

Probably the best narrated audio book ever

Fantastic from start to finish. Rosamund Pike brings every character to life from the smallest conversations to the loudest battle cries in the old tongue.

Amazing.

A fresh take on a classic

*The Wheel of Time* has a special place in my heart, as it does for countless fans around the world. I read the (paper) books during one of the most challenging periods of my life, and I honestly think I would not be where I am today if not for the hope I got from these books.

That being said, I honestly tried to like the Kramer and Reading recordings for years. I’ve listened through all the books multiple times, trying to figure out exactly why I do not enjoy their work on these books. I know they have legions of fans but, for some reason, they never worked for me. These are highly charged, extremely emotional books, and while I think Reading puts a fair bit of emotion into her performances, Kramer does not.

Once again, this is purely my personal opinion.

Pike gave me what I had hoped to get when I first bought the WOT audios. The breathless anticipation, the riveting action sequences, the tension, the drama, the romance, the thrill. The Prologue, for instance, is an extremely tense scene. There is a tremendous amount of history behind every word that is written in that one chapter, not to mention the amount of drama — Kramer’s reading felt a little… lax. Pike’s voice, on the other hand, flowed. The dialogue is emotional, the descriptions are vivid, and she has a tremendous amount of control in how she portrays these characters. The ending of the Prologue, one of the most dramatic closing scenes in any WOT book, is builds like an orchestra with Pike’s performance, the tension climbing and climbing before coming crashing down with all the force of a tsunami.

Once more, I laud Kramer and Reading for lending their voices to an incredible series of books. Personally, I struggled to enjoy their performance, and Rosamund Pike’s voice worked like magic for me. She gives a vivid, fresh face to a classic tale, and I think she does a wonderful job.

I sincerely hope she goes on to narrate the rest of the books.

Daniel Henney should read the male voices

I really like Rosamud Pikes narration of this book as a alternative to the original. I still like the original as well. I think if they plan to redo all the other books, it would be awesome to see someone like Daniel Henney or one of the other male actors from the Amazon series to narrate the male character in the same fashion as the original version that Michael Kramer and Kate Reading did.

Wow

Just amazing. Love the original by Michael kramer and Kate Reading, but Rosamund brings a whole new level. Had me hooked from the beginning and I didnt want to "put it down" 10 out of 5 stars. Hope she does the rest of the rest of the series or other series. Amazing.

Beautiful Narration

I’m a huge fan of the original Kramer/Reading audiobook narration. I always will be. But this lovely performance by Rosamund Pike has been an utter joy to listen to. Her voice is so well suited to reading this kind of story that I found myself revisiting chapters just to hear her marvelous take on Robert Jordan’s prose.

Masterful narration gives new life to a classic

This new narration gives EOTW the weight and gravitas it deserves. It's like stepping into this world again for the first time. Like most people, I am a fan of the originals and am happy to have both. It's wonderful to hear a new interpretation, and it's a breathtaking performance. It's asking a lot but I really hope she does the whole series. Wow!

This reading is exceptional

Michael Kramer and Kate Reading will always have a special place in my heart for their narration, but Rosamund Pike absolutely knocked it out of the park. This is a reading that elevates the story being told in every possible way, it adds a certain gravitas that is missing in the original recordings.

I really hope she does the rest of the books. I may already have all 14 of them, but I absolutely would spend 14 more credits for the rest of the series done by her.

5 stars!!!

An old love with new narration. A must buy.

I have loved this series my whole life and this narration has rekindled the fierce fire of passion I felt towards it. If you are reading this and wondering which one you should buy I tell you this one my friend. Rosamund Pike is such a wonder to listen to.

A lifelong passion rediscovered.

I was barely 13 when I started reading the wheel of time.. Every year a book. That long wait between publishing. I remember where I was when I heard Jordan had died, I had just started reading a Knife of dreams. And I had cried as hard as I would have loosing a friend...

With the series out, I felt the tug to return to these books though I knew I didn't have the time as I had before. Audiobooks were the answer, but I didn't like the original narration I have to confess. It didn't feel the same as reading. Then I saw this. Amlnd it was everything I hoped for and more. Rosamund Pike gave it the feel and atmosphere I wanted it to have. Even with one narrator, the characters stand out. She reads it clearly and unrushed, the acvents rich and colourful, the emotions reaching your ears through a spectacular performance. I wish with all my being that she will continue reading this series. It is a lot, I know. But wow.

I read a lot of critism about the length of Jordan's books these days from people who clearly think they could have done better. They clearly haven't because I don't see thousands of epic length series on the bookstores shelves. If you have heard of that and are hesitant, I want you to ask yourself this:

Do you love a journey without being anxious about the end? Do you love fantasy, high fantasy, epic fantasy. Fantasy from the masters. Feist. Donaldson. Goodkind. Brooks.
Are ypu ready to be pulled into a world so vast and rich that it comes with an encyclopedia?
If so. Then this is the series for you. Ignore those moaning about it's length and it's editing and how it should be shorter. What's the rush? Why would you want to rush a series as magnificent as this one.

Exceptionally performed

Even though I’ve read the entire series many times, I found Rosamund Pike’s rendition of The Eye of the World absolutely enchanting. She manages to inject uniqueness to each character without sounding contrived. I found myself completely lost in another world because of her storytelling. My only complaint is that I don’t know if she’ll be doing the rest of the series. Please please please make it happen!
