Summary

When the most eligible Earl of Rule offers for the hand of the beauty of the Winwood family, he has no notion of the distress he causes his intended. For Miss Lizzie Winwood is promised to the excellent, but impoverished, Mr Edward Heron. Disaster can only be averted by the delightful impetuosity of her youngest sister, Horatia, who conceives her own, distinctly original plans . . .

Loved this

Not the best plot and somewhat over worked but a 5 star romp which kept making me gighle thanks to the anrics of Pelham, Pom set against the languid Rule who habdles the nursery antics with aplomb. Great for a very wet Friday otherwise spent concentrating on something rather dry.

Another great read

Georgette Heyer brings us another regency romance with her wonderful style she shows that she is a cut above the normal Mills and boon writer. .

Terrible narration

I couldn't stand the narrator for this novel. The way she interpreted the main character's stammer was so galling I had to stop listening. Such a shame because I love Georgette Heyer. I don't know if I'll ever be able to read this one now.

AMAZING

It was one of the best Georgette Hayer I’ve ever listen to. That and the Corinthian and The Reluctant Widow

Excellent reader

It's not the very best of Heyer but quite amusing. Caroline Hunt did a great job performing the heroine's coarse voice and little stammer. The other characters are very fine spoken as well.

A brilliant romp!

I loved everything about this story and it’s almost become my favourite second only to Sprig Muslim! All the characters were played to perfection by Caroline Hunt and her delightful stuttering by Horatia was just right. This story has all the ingredients of a Heyer plot and romance. I read it in my teens many years ago but it is definitely made more enjoyable by listening to the narrator. I can thoroughly recommend it for a funny, romantic and ‘take you out of yourself’ story !

Witty and romantic

One of my favourite stories, and I’ve read all of her romances (many times)! This one has a particularly witty script and involves an unusually strong heroine and a fabulously macho hero. The narrator portrays all of the characters well and also manages to capture the fun in the conversations.

Very funny

Real historical romance, the most fruity it got was a kiss.
Great descriptions and brilliant play between characters. Pelham was an awesome brother absolutely hilarious.

S-s-s-superb!

I really enjoyed Heyer novels in my not so distant youth and this recording has brought the book to life again for me. The characters are all very well portrayed and it is lovely to hear the descriptions of the fineries of the Regency period. I would take slight issue the pronunciation of the occasional word, but nothing to detract from the enjoyment of the novel. The narrator captures Horatia's stutter beautifully and listening to this recording is a light-hearted way to pass some relaxing hours if you like the novels or are interested in the period

Don’t let the narration ruin Heyer for you

I love Georgette Heyer’s books and although this one is not my favourite, it is a charming story with truly comical moments. This is all lost in the narration. In fact even hearing the teaser I left it til the very last Heyer that I bought. I often listen to books while falling asleep and my partner came in and he who can normally drown out the books, found the narrator so dreadful he slept on the sofa. It is a shame as the heroine is particularly terrible and is the most masculine of all the voices. Very poor acting too. This book is many Heyer fans’ favourite so just don’t let it put you off as she is wonderful to read and delightful when read well
