Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Annis Wychwood delights in her independence.

Beautiful, rich and far too busy for love, she has turned down the advances of many a hopeful suitor.

But when she becomes entangled in the affairs of a runaway heiress, she encounters the girl's guardian, the notorious Oliver Carleton. While Oliver may be a reckless and uncivil rogue, Annis can't help but be drawn towards his wild ways.

Critic reviews

"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austens'." (Joanne Harris)

"Rapturously romantic." (Katie Fforde)

"Georgette Heyer is second to none." (Sunday Times)

The last half of the book saved the story

I love Mr Carlton very much. The story starts off very slowly, but when the couples get together it feels like fireworks and it’s beautiful.

The voices were good and there’s a bit of humour here and there to make the story more pleasing.

Narration was good, it felt a little stiff in some areas, but nonetheless it wasn’t unpleasant to the ears.

Enjoyable yarn

Great escapism but marred by bewildering speed of narration. Manic quality made it unnerving! Cured for me by slowing it down by adjusting the speed dial.

Not the best Heyer and not a great reader

One of Heyer’s older heroines with a strong personality, but not as witty or interesting as Federica or Venetia or Sophie or Debs. The story is a bit weak; not clear why anyone should fall for the rogue Oliver, the young characters and the tedious cousin are only mildly entertaining. And the performance really doesn’t help. Missing the excellent Phyllida Nash, once again. What a shame that her readings have been removed. I would certainly buy more if read by her. Audible please take notice?

I enjoyed this book ….

Even so the story is slightly flat - I thoroughly enjoyed myself listening to the story
And against many critics - I enjoyed the narrator!!!

Reader was not aware of Regency terms

Mispronunciatipns and unsuitable emphases limited the reader's ability to convey a tale which depends heavily on the creation of a Regency atmosphere

Heyer never disappoints

Not one of my favourite Heyer stories but one can't but relish the wonderful wit and sparkling language. Narrator did an adequate job.

Poor reading

I am a great fan of Georgette Heyer generally, but this, although pleasant, is not one of her better books. There is some good characterisation, but the plot is thin and the humour depends more or less on one well-drawn, annoying character. Nevertheless, in the hands of a sensitive reader, much could be made of it. But this reader was not sensitive. She made many mistakes of pronunciation and frequently misjudged the balance of a sentence so that the emphasis fell on the wrong word. Her worst fault, though, was that she was limited in her characterisation: all the men sounded the same and were permanently irritated and harsh. This ruined any scenes that required warmth or gentleness. I don’t think she liked or understood this book.
