Story
Today, we're living in a world of squiggly careers, where moving frequently and fluidly between roles, industries, locations and even careers, is becoming the new normal. Squiggly careers can feel stressful and overwhelming, but if you know how to make the most of them, they can be full of opportunity, freedom and purpose. And to make the most of our increasingly squiggly careers we need to answer some important questions: What am I good at? What do I stand for? What motivates and drives me? Where do I want to go in the future?

Story
In Super Bowl XLIX, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made one of the most controversial calls in football history: With 26 seconds remaining, and trailing by four at the Patriots' one-yard line, he called for a pass instead of a handing off to his star running back. The pass was intercepted, and the Seahawks lost. Critics called it the dumbest play in history. But was the call really that bad? Or did Carroll actually make a great move that was ruined by bad luck? Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time.

Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In recent months, the pandemic has forced us all to reevaluate our assumptions about health and safety and multiple acts of police brutality have challenged most of us to reconsider our responsibility for fighting racism. Yet in our daily lives, too many of us still favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt.

In this landmark audiobook, David Epstein shows that the way to excel is by sampling widely, gaining a breadth of experiences, taking detours, experimenting relentlessly, juggling many interests - in other words, by developing range. Studying the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors and scientists, Epstein discovered that in most fields - especially those that are complex and unpredictable - generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. They are also more creative, more agile and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see.

A Business Tool For Application and Direction
I m right now listening to your book on audible as I've read the hardback version but want to absorb it all better as I sit and work away in my new workshop!
Your book has taught me much in terms of energy, time management and knowing when and how to make decisions to move my business forward. Today after listening to chapter 10, I was deep in thought about the earlier lessons I've learned since reading your book. The earliest lesson it taught me was 'energy' where I am expending it and learning to use it wisely and value it. Today I can now say I am taking the time to really pause, especially now we are all in lockdown. It has given me time to stop and breathe and think more and reflect on how I am doing things. I came to the conclusion that being so busy and 'managing' my business was really me expending lots of energy but not double downing on business priorities, the things, and just the little things, that need attention. So, in this time since lockdown it has forced me to re-evaluate and see in more detail, as though in slow motion, how and where I need to focus to take action and decide what action is needed to get the desired outcomes I am striving for. And guess what! It is working like a dream. I have increased sales, developed better customer relationships and worked more strategically with purpose and clearer direction in the marketing areas that needed most attention.
