Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

In this world of bribes, vendettas, and swindling, in which heiresses are gambled and won, Trollope's characters embody all the vices: Lady Carbury is 'false from head to foot'; her son Felix has 'the instincts of a horse, not approaching the higher sympathies of a dog'; and Melmotte - the colossal figure who dominates the book - is a 'horrid, big, rich scoundrel...a bloated swindler...a vile city ruffian'. "I write this sitting at the kitchen sink" is the first line of a novel about love, sibling rivalry, and a bohemian existence in a crumbling castle in the middle of nowhere. Cassandra Mortmin's journal records her fadingly glamorous stepmother, her beautiful, wistful older sister, and the man to whom they owe both their isolation and poverty: Father. The author of one experimental novel, and a minor cause celebre, he has since suffered from writer's block and is determined to drag his family down with him.

Extra Points for the Audio
This was my first encounter with "Rumpole", and I loved it! While the criminal plots in these stories are not terribly sophisticated or suspenseful, the humour and sociological observations are sharp as nails. Patrick Tull's narration is marvelous. He wallows in the language and brings the disparate cast of characters to life. Rumpole's deeply ironic persepctive is far better appreciated when heard, than merely read silently.

Please bring back Bill Wallis!
Would you try another book written by John Mortimer or narrated by Patrick Tull?
No
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Patrick Tull?
Bill Wallis
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The story is good, but the Bill Wallis version is much better.
Any additional comments?
I accidentally purchased this audiobook recommended by Audible.co.uk and found that I had already listened to it, but narrated by Bill Wallis. I only listed to 5 minutes of this, but the narration was painful: it sounded pompous and hesitant.

Poor narration
The Rumpole stories are fun. However, Patrick Tull as a narrator is not up to snuff. I didn't expect him to sound like Leo McKern, and he doesn't. What is annoying is that there are long pauses here and there. The Rumpole audio with Timothy West is, by contrast, wonderful.

Just When You're Really Depressed
by the story, Mortimer pulls it out of the bag and ends on a bright spot. You have to let it build. The stories are solid. And I have to come clean, I'm a total Patrick Tull fan-girl, but after hearing him read Dickens, Peters, and O'Brian, I'm just amazed at his ability to provide a totally clean slate for Rumpole. He doesn't read like Aubrey or Brother Cadfael. He's unmistakable as Rumpole. Tull's talent was extraordinary. Put Mortimer and Tull together and, well, there it is. A fully realized novel.

Patrick Tull cannot make up for uninspired, cliche
Has Rumpole ever met a criminal he didn't like? These are very sentimental, hackneyed stories told with a minimal amount of wit. Patrick Tull gives it an admirable goal, but the material is wanting.
