About this listen

A civilization-ending comet is headed for Earth. Two days before impact, thousands of mysterious pods land in a swath across North America. When people touch them, the pods open. Anyone who climbs inside is carried away. No one knows where the pods came from and no one knows where they go, but finding one is David Williams’ only chance to save his family from the end of the world … and escaping Earth is just the beginning.

THE PRESERVATION OF SPECIES trilogy begins with RULE OF EXTINCTION, a post-apocalyptic science-fiction adventure filled with unforgettable heroes, terrifying monsters, and heart-pounding action.

A good first instalment, fast paced and packed with action but sometimes feeling overwhelmed by the number of character POV’s, however endeavouring to give depth to the main characters thru its use of backstory when new characters are introduced, some you’ll like some you’ll hate and some you just wish weren’t in the story at all.
Performance was for the most part excellent although I’m sorry to say the narrator can not do British accents

First chapter quickly introduces the world and several characters without messing around and then gives us a nice mystery to push us into chapter 2, and the story then doesn’t dawdle around but keeps moving at a good pace for the duration of the tale.

There are a lot of characters introduced and they are all kept fairly distinct, and the only minor problem I had with the narration was with three female characters at the start who didn’t have much distinction in the voices, but otherwise the narration was clear and well done.

Gave me the vibe of the Lost TV series, with a group of strangers coming together and then getting flashbacks that reveal more about them, with a few dark secrets. But then it also gave me the feeling of the Walking Dead, again with a group coming together and the true monsters maybe being the humans. So at its core it is a tale of a group of strangers being thrown together, after a dramatic event, in a strange place and how they interact with each other and the dangers and mysterious they face.

Death comes quickly in this story, often in a gruesome fashion, making you unsure who is safe in this world, which is always good. The story held my interest with the mysteries and revelations, and the action helped to keep it all ticking along nicely to the end, giving us resolutions but also leaving plenty more to discover.

Enjoyed the listen over the last couple of weeks and looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Received this book free of monetary charge to give it an honest review but it still cost me that most valuable currency of time, and electricity of course. So I listened to the whole audio with my currency of time, and electricity, and have given an honest review of what I thought here.

This book had me hooked from the start. All the different perspectives and characters. I had no idea the direction the story would take but I had to keep listening to know what happens next.

I can’t wait to listen to the next book, I’m excited to see where it goes.

Fun and exciting listen
