About this listen

As a Marine, Henry Morgan would have said it was more likely he’d die from enemy fire than from being struck by a flying lawnmower while at a baseball game.

But it was the lawnmower that ended up taking him out.

A century later, Henry wakes up as a reconstituted intelligence, and is promptly drafted to be the governing AI for America’s first military starship. After decades of model-trained AIs wreaking havoc across the globe, humanity is ready to try something a little more…human.

Henry is perfect. For one thing, as a reconstituted intelligence, he has no rights and can be forced to do the bidding of the powers that be. For another, he’s the only Heritage Mind™ with any military experience that survived the Great Power Surge of 2072.

So, Henry’s it.

Blastoff, good Henry! Our hopes and dreams go with you. Oh, and while you’re at it, could you take a look at the aliens setting up shop in our asteroid belt? They seem to be…multiplying.

Download I, Starship now and grab the edge of your seat for this bold new space opera.

If you came to this wondering if it's like Bobiverse, a quick note for you: kind of. It begins much the same way and answers many of the same questions, but it's not as jokey and pop-culture heavy (nor does it explore self-replicating probes). The setting of this series frankly makes more sense, vastly less cosmic coincidences and convenient tech that solves enormous problems (the setting for this is more military, meaning that individual heroism matters, but it's gotta be for the team). If you want more of the same topic this series may help, but if you just loved the tone, this is rather different. Now, onward for the rest:

In short, this is fantastic, as my star rating would suggest. As author, Scott establishes characters with backstories with quick strokes, and then allows them to show their character by their actions, allowing for them to develop naturally. As narrator, Mark keeps the characters interesting and distinct without adding annoyance (beyond what some characters do all by themselves). It's not a story without regrets, but it's not overwhelmingly dark either. This seems to have been written as two short books combined into one; it has two quite satisfying and not standalone arcs, but is only the first volume of a series whose second volume is now newly added to my wishlist. I'm looking forward to seeing how the remaining loose ends will be woven into the next story.

I am a big fan of Mr Boyett as a narrator - but when he tries to do 5 different accents for the Marines on board the ship - I was lost between cod Irish , laughable eyeetaalian and I think Pakistani or could have been Welsh and please do not even go to the English upper class Captain Simee (Terry Thomas anybody) - it all just distracted from the story (which does get bogged down for whole chapters in petty squabbles between people who are supposedly going to be part of a disciplined crew for many many years ....Sorry I gave up after 3 hours .. Mark - leave the accents out !!

Please leave the accents alone !!

I've listened to another book from this author before and i liked the premise of the main character being a digitally uploaded consciousness (and therefore a trustworthy narrator surely) with the story being told from the P.O.V. of the 'ship's computer'. Not a groundbreakingly new concept but still rare enough to get my attention.
I think that this may be targeted at a younger audience, it obviously appeals to many people since this is the first book of nine!
Although I don't need all my sci-fi entertainment to be either scathing social commentary, thinly veiled moral allegory or fantastical flights of fancy, this story has elements that is obviously intended to evoke these themes, 'what is reality', racism, discrimination, servitude, 'Humanity' with both a big and a little 'h'. It started slow for me so when The second half ramped up the action and the story really got going it was a relief and [spoiler!] the infererence the title of prospective villian being transferred might be enouhh to interest me in the rest of the series.

a new-ish p.o.v.
