Summary

On a remote Highland mountain, the body of Elaine Buxton is burning. All that will be left to identify the respected lawyer are her teeth and a fragment of clothing. In the concealed back room of a house in Edinburgh, the real Elaine Buxton screams into the darkness....

Detective Inspector Luc Callanach has barely set foot in his new office when Elaine’s missing persons case is escalated to a murder investigation. Having left behind a promising career at Interpol, he’s eager to prove himself to his new team. But Edinburgh, he discovers, is a long way from Lyon, and Elaine’s killer has covered his tracks with meticulous care. It’s not long before another successful woman is abducted from her doorstep and Callanach finds himself in a race against the clock. Or so he believes....

The real fate of the women will prove more twisted than he could have ever imagined. Fans of Angela Marson, Mark Billingham and M. J. Aldridge will be gripped by this chilling journey into the mind of a troubled killer.

What a difference the choice of narrator can make.

I bought this when it was first released and made a couple of attempts at listening to it, but the original narrator had the most horrendous French accent (reminiscent of 'Aloe 'Aloe') and it was torchure to my wee ears.

I was obviously drawn to it many times and had even bought it again with a new narrator, but I hadn't realised it until recently. When I noticed, I checked out Robin Laing version and I am now writing this 1 week and 6 books in.

Yup I love the series. Gritty story lines, relatable characters and each story builds seamlessly into the next. I feel like I know the characters, some I love, some irritate me and others that make me lol at their Scottish banter. A Scottish girl myself, I really get it.

I'm mearing the end of the series and I am excited and dreading it in equal measures. I want to know what happens to the main characters, will they won't they?? I shall say no more.

Well written and a massive improvement in narration. It always astounds me when you just know a good book is being slaughtered by the person reading it. With the best will in the world you just can't get past it and an author loses out on reaching so many listeners as a result.

Note to authors. You put your blood sweat and tears into the process of writing, producing and promoting your work, dont let it down at the point of selecting a narrator. It really can put us listeners off for good xx

Superb, Amazing, Gripping & Adictive listening!

Perfect Remains is quite frankly just brilliant.
As a self confessed 'true crime junkie' it had been a while to re-indulge back into fiction, but needless to say Perfect Remains absolutely ticked all the boxes for me and fulfilled my expectation!

It's an absoloutely gripping storyline, having me hooked in from the very start, being so immersed I listened to the whole story in two days flat.

This is very well written by Helen and additionally well narrated.

Have now purchased Perfect Prey the next book in order and and enjoying every moment of listening to the next book.

Wonderful book. Would definitely reccomend

Loved it. It's a great book with a very gripping and intriguing storyline. Laing is a very good narrator and consistent with the accents. He read with great enthusiasm and emotion, which helped build the image and personality of the characters - especially with Dr. King. Laing's voice is the total opposite of boring and monotonous, which meant I could keep listening and stay interested rather than falling asleep.

BOOK ONE...... CAN'T WAIT TO LISTEN TO BOOK 2

Helen has written an outstanding book that kept my attention through out, with rich characters and an exciting story line. Brilliantly read and definitely a book I'm glad I chose to listen to as the reader brought the characters to life, great accents and dialect, making the whole book come to life. Downloading Book 2 now :)

Horrible

What sort of twisted mind comes up with these ideas? . Haunted my waking hours also. Did not get past first few chapters as so disgusting. Don't care if the killer got his just rewards, I feel violated by hearing it.

All around great.

I found this author during the recent sale. It was a very good story and I liked the characters. There is some mystery regarding the backstory of the lead and I look forward to hearing more about him. I've already purchased the rest of the books in the series since they were on sale. I have high hopes for this author!

A perfect thrilling audiobook!

Helen Fields, thank you for creating wonderful characters and a tense, smart, darkly imaginative thriller that I found nearly impossible to put down. The story is masterfully performed by Robin Laing, an incredible reader and accomplished actor who brings each character to life in the most believable way and never makes women’s voices sound nasally or false the way many male readers do. I am now a fan of both Fields and Laing and am ready for more! So grateful to have found this audiobook.

A great disappointment

I'm always in search of new police procedurals with well-developed characters, an interesting plotline, and a great ending. This is none of the above. The characters are wooden and not very good at their jobs. Far too much minute descriptions of torture and we're asked to believe that strong, accomplished, and resourceful women become helpless pawns. I don't ever want to read this author again.

Great story but narrator kept losing me.

This is well-written police-procedural. The characters have depth and I’d like to hear more about them. My issue was the narrator whose pitch varied way too much. Each sentence trailed off to an almost whisper and I missed a lot of what he was saying. I listen while I run or walk and can’t keep adjusting the volume so it was very frustrating. I enjoyed the story but I’m not sure I’ll get the next in the series.

Good Story

The story was good but the narration was distracting. Flat and unemotional when needed. Accent good

Unbelievable

The story is way too long and stretches credibility. Also the main character's back story and reason for leaving Interpol for Edinburgh police is preposterous. I will not read more books from this author.

WOW!

Sweetly surprised by how good this was. I couldn’t stop listening - finish it in one day!
Can’t wait to see what this Frenchman in Scotland gets up to next.
