About this listen

‘Relentless pace, devilish cleverness and a laser-sharp focus on plot.’ Chris Brookmyre

This audiobook includes an exclusive piece, written by Helen Fields, on the development of DI Callanach’s character throughout the series.

When silence falls, who will hear their cries?

The body of a young girl is found dumped on the roadside on the outskirts of Edinburgh. When pathologists examine the remains, they make a gruesome discovery: the outline of a doll carved into the victim’s skin.

DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach are struggling to find leads in the case, until a doll made of skin is found nestled beside an abandoned baby.

After another young woman is found butchered, Luc and Ava realise the babydoll killer is playing a horrifying game. And it’s only a matter of time before he strikes again. Can they stop another victim from being silenced forever – or is it already too late?

I’m loving the series but the extent of poetic license means that for me personally with real life police experience some of the storyline lacks credibility and as such detracts from the story. I understand that it can add an edge to the story to suggest that the Police Scotland Board can in any way interfere with or oversee operational police matters and promotions but in reality that would not and indeed could not happen. Similarly perpetuating the myth that the police won’t routinely take a missing person report for at least 24 hours is disappointing.

Some poetic license

Enjoyed the book from start to finish as with all the others in this series. Narrator makes it easy to listen too.

I really enjoyed this book, as I have done her others, but it didn't grab my attention as much as the other books in the series. Great narration as always!! I thought the bit about DS Lively (I won't say what!) was a bit far fetched. It said the book included an exclusive piece by the author about the development of Luc's character but there was nothing - I was disappointed about that!!

Another brilliant book in the series!
